I have only had my dog for 4 months, he is 3 and was underweight when I got him. They only fed him dry food!!! My husband says no to a raw diet. My husky loves cooked pork, hamburg, pork, steak, chicken anything like that. My question is ? Is it ok to feed him cooked meat versus the raw. He loves cooked scrambled eggs too.
I give him kibble and a small can of Pro Plan the better kind at night but during the day I like to cook him something. Is that wrong? I have read so much about huskies but trying to learn more on the feeding. I want him to stay healthy Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Why is raw feeding being turned down? If you want to feed raw, I'd suggest finding out what it is that is the sticking point, and finding a way around it.

There's no reason to go through extra trouble to cook food, and in return, likely make it less healthy for your dog. I'm sure there are people who would disagree, but from my research, that's what I've found.

If you do end up cooking the meat, I believe that boiling it is the best way to cook it. However, I am not totally positive, so if someone knows better, please feel free to correct me!

Thanks he is afraid of worms and parasites in the raw food. Believe me I have tried to get him to change his mind but he won't lol So I cook it for him I just hope it is not hurting him the cooked meat versus the raw.

I'd suggest feeding frozen, rather than fresh foods, to help him get over his fears. Our dogs prefer frozen meat anyway. By freezing the meat, you'd be killing worms and parasites that commonly live in wild game. We follow this procedure for our snakes as well, since parasites in rats/mice/rabbits can kill a snake as well as a dog. Freezing removes this issue.

I don't mean to come off as rude, so please don't take it that way. My point is that you are exchanging one "naturally incorrect" diet for another "naturally incorrect" diet. Anytime you take an animal off of it's natural food, you run into all new problems. I honestly wouldn't be able to say whether a high quality, grain free kibble would be better or worse than your home cooked food. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that both are less optimal than raw feeding by itself.

There's nothing wrong or unsafe about feeding cooked meats. But it just seems silly to take that time and effort for nothing since they can eat it raw. Just be sure what you choose you are ensuring he's getting what he needs.

I completely understand what you are going through. Chris is weird about raw as well. I didn't want to be cooking for them all the time (no way am I cooking for the dogs when I don't cook for myself lol) so instead we took a different route.

Through suggestions on this forum we tried Grandma Lucy's Pureformance. Its Freeze Dried Food. Amazing for them, easy to feed and no fuss over the raw. We also supplement with Kibble. Our dogs love the variety and thank God I found this forum, because I have learned so much about nutrition.

Cooking is perfectly okay for the dog, not so fun for you!

Our feeding routine looks like this:

Delilah - 37 - 39lb 2 year old female :

Morning - 3/4 c. of either Blue Wilderness Salmon/Duck or Acana Wild Prairie
Evening - 3/4c. - 1 c. of Grandma Lucy's Pureformance (depends on activity for that day.)

Cato - 25-27lb 5 month old Male:

Morning- 1 c, of either kibbles
Evening- 1 1/4 c. of Grandma Lucy's Pureformance (Can be adjusted for activity.

I totally understand that some people are afraid of raw so I think what you're doing is a great alternative. Cooked meat is inferior to raw meat when feeding it to our dogs but cooked is definitely better than no added meat at all so you're on the right track so long as you're feeding boneless cooked meat. If your husband is okay with you feeding the meat cooked rare then that would be better than well done too if you can get away with that. I'd definitely keep feeding the meat though and FWIW I supplement my dogs' diet with both cooked and raw meat...keeps things interesting.
