PostSubject: Humping question   Humping question EmptySun May 06, 2012 5:19 pm

Is there any way to stop the humping at dog parks or prevent it?

I will say off and she will stop and jump off but I feel like she is back at it with another dog. She is spayed. I just never dealt with a humping dog. I know a lot has to do with her being majority dominate but just wondering how to stop it? She just started this a month or 2 ago. I am afraid one dog won't like it and hurt her.

Well since she's female, and spayed, I would say it is more than likely that she is doing it to establish dominance. Does she hump only things that are similar in size? Seems like she is probably usually one of the bigger dogs at the park, even being a petite mal. Does she only hump things the same size and smaller? or has she tried to mount bigger dogs as well? Since it is an ingrained instinctual thing, you will have to associate the humping with something less pleasant than a friendly reminder to stop. I'd start with something like a squirt bottle.

If she sees the equation as

Humping = getting annoyingly squirted with that stupid bottle

she may stop. I am giving advice without experience though, as keeonah is a petite husky, and doesn't often try to display dominance

She will mount any size dog lol! She won't do like huge huge dogs like saints or things like that. She will do bigger dogs then her and sometime little ones. She is very friendly and play with them just humping galore. She hates water sprayed on her so that may work. lol! I will try next time I go to the park. Ya she is smaller than most malamutes, so I dunno if being the runt made her dom! lol

This topic always makes me laugh I don't know why Very Happy but Balon humps his lab sister who outweighs him by 40 lbs, She in turns humps him as well, I know they are establishing their dominance, right now it is definitely the lab! There is no fighting, just periodic humping, I always say off to the culprit.

Which succeeds in getting the dog to stop mounting once it has started. Which is fine. But associating the humping with something unpleasant (like the water), if consistently practiced, will eventually condition the dog. Every single time he/she goes to hump, they remember that that water is coming if they do, and it will eventually eliminate the behavior altogether. Similar to dogs jumping up, bite inhibition, etc. Just have to speak the dogs language Wink

I was about to post a topic on humping, saw MyKeeonah's suggestion to spray with water. Hallelujah! After just 3 attempts he's stopped!

.... for tonight, until we have to remind him again tomorrow. lol!
