2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Cloudiness on the outside of the eye Empty
PostSubject: Cloudiness on the outside of the eye    Cloudiness on the outside of the eye EmptySun Apr 29, 2012 12:07 pm

So last week I thought I saw some cloudiness on the outside of Mickeys right eye, I wasn't sure and thought it could be a glare. I'm looking at it again today and it does seem that's what it is... He has a small bit on the right eye and about half of that size on his left eye. It's not "in" his eye.. but on the outside. There doesn't seem to be any discharge or redness...

Thoughts?

Could be a juvenile cataract? My books says:

"Hereditary cataracts are perhaps the most common and problematic eye abnormality in this breed. They should not be confused with cataracts that develop due to aging, and they are sometimes called juvenile cataracts as a way to distinguish the two. These cataracts are bilateral in nature, but may first appear in one eye before appearing in the second. They manifest as an opacity of the lens and may appear as early as 3 months of age, but typically appear between 6 and 24 months of age. Traditionally, juvenile cataracts develop in the eye, along the 'Y' suture in the lens, and allow less light to enter the eye. However, other cataract patterns are not unknown. These opacities traditionally impair eyesight but do not lead to blindness, except in some severe cases."

Either way I would go to the vet and then an ophthalmologist!

It's not the lens that's affected, it's the cornea. Maybe it's an ulcer? Or an abrasion? Just wondering if anyone has ever had anything like this in their dogs before. I used to get infections and scratches on my cornea a lot before I switched contact lenses... Maybe it's just from driving with his head out the window...

"Corneal Crystalline Opacity

Oddly enough, it was while studying corneal crystalline opacity (CCO, often referred to as corneal dystrophy) that Siberian Husky cataracts were actually discovered. It was originally believed that CCo was the significant eye disorder in Siberians , but this was soon eclipsed by the prevalence of cataracts. CCO in Siberian Huskies does not usually appear in puppies or young dogs, as is the case with cataracts. Rather, CCO generally appears in older adult dogs.

CCO is a deposit on the cornea, often in a doughnut shape, that causes some opacity, but usually does not lead to blindness. It is believed that the mode of inheritance for this disorder is perhaps a recessive gene with a mutation. Like cataracts, the only way to be assured that your Siberian is free of CCo is to have his eyes examined each year by a canine ophthalmologist. Again, this exam will show if a Siberian has the eye abnormality, not if he is a genetic carrier of it."

It could very well be just a scratch or something. Something might have gotten into his eye from the sticking his head out the window for sure!

Guess we'll head to the vet this week. Going to get some lubricating eye drops and no more window time for them. They will be sad lol

Aw Sad! It really could be nothing more than a scratch though, from playing, from one of the other dogs, from a stick.

I wasn't trying to worry you! I figured though since it was similar to what I had read I would share with you though as a"just in case"!
