Question about heat cycles? Empty
PostSubject: Question about heat cycles?   Question about heat cycles? EmptyThu May 03, 2012 1:34 am

I wasn't sure where to post this question. But Shelby is almost 6.5 months old & she should be going into heat pretty soon. She smells really musty sometimes, it's almost overwhelming, but have not noticed any bleeding or any behavioral changes, she is supposed to be getting fixed next week too. So my main concern is her being in heat the same time she gets her surgery, is it more dangerous for them to operate on her when she is going through her heat cycle, & also do you think it will result in any long-term behavioral changes? & how do you know if she is for sure in heat anyway? Do they bleed a lot when they are in heat? I don't wanna have to clean up any more messes than what i already do. lol Smile

Sounds like she is about to go into heat. One of ours would start smelling musty before going into heat. It is more of a risk to spay while they are in heat. As for behavioral changes, I don't think you'll really notice any. If you let her go through her heat, you may notice why they call them bitches! Wink

And yes, you usually see drops of blood when they are in heat. First they will get swollen back there and then a few days later the bleeding will start, then a week or so later the bleeding stops, but that is when they are receptive to male dogs. So be sure to keep her locked away with a key until a couple of weeks after her bleeding stops!

I would talk to your vet and see if you can get the spay bumped up to this week instead.

Lol well ours already acts bitchy so that shouldn't be anything new..but I am hoping that she doesn't go into heat by the time her surgery next week. We can't move the appointment because we won't be financially ready for her surgery until that time. Thanks for your advice. Smile

We just went through a spay while in heat, it was her first heat cycle too...it's more expensive to spay during a heat cycle, (at least at my vet) so you may want to have your vet check her out first. Not all vets will do the surgery while in heat.
If at all possible I would wait until after her first cycle if she has already started it. It's a good bit safer as well because she will bleed more during surgery.
Good luck with everything, and I wish her a speedy recovery!!! Smile
