PostSubject: Hello from Chicago!   Hello from Chicago! EmptySun Apr 15, 2012 10:16 pm

Hello! I live with my family and our two Siberian Huskies in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I've had at least one Siberian Husky in my home since 1993.

My family spends a lot of time outdoors and our Siberians are with us most of the time. We hike, camp, and canoe with our dogs. The past couple years I've really gotten into primitive skills and I really enjoy the skills of my primitive dogs!

I hope to learn a lot from you.

Here is a pic of our Sibes pulling the kids.

Hello from Chicago! Rosie_11

Thanks for the comments. The dogs love running with just the kids. They can move at a better pace. I have to move at a better pace too! Imagine chasing them down on snowshoes. Smile

Welcome! You are lucky you have trails near by that you can run your dogs. I just moved to the western side of Illinois about 6 months ago from Wisconsin, and have yet to find any nice trails, its all pavement around here. Thats nice that you get your kids involved. I wish I had been introduced to dog sledding at a younger age.

Welcome! We've had quite the influx of Illinoisans lately, which is great to see. I grew up in Urbana and my parents live in the SW suburbs now. I'd love to get back that way when I get out of the Navy.

That's an awesome picture of your dogs pulling the kid too!

We are fortunate that the Chicago area has some decent trails for hiking and running dogs. The state parks are okay, but to really get into a place that has a wild feel we have to travel. There are a couple great spots in the national forests in Michigan that I head up to a few times a year. We hardly bump into others which is awesome!

Check out your state's DNR site for local parks. You might be surprised at what you find!

evelazquez, that pic is taken on the main trail along the river between Lawrence and Irving Park Road. You've probably hiked it with your dog. Smile

Hi, welcome! That's awesome that you do so much with your pups. How do you handle them on a canoe? I have a runner (I think the other one won't run because it means he'll have to look for his own food)...so I haven't ventured with taking them canoeing or anything other than a walk or a hike. I did try bicycling once, that ended in disaster! :-)

Obedience in the canoe while on dry ground is how we start. But there is always a risk they will get nervous when on the water. My canoe is royalex, so it flexes. Kody doesn't like that. Dash gets too excited to care. Smile But they do okay when on the water. Of course I haven't brought anything into the boat I can't afford to lose while they are in. I have this feeling we are do for a spill soon. Smile

That's right across the street. I usually do the Lawrence to Foster trail along the river.

Thanks for the tip about obedience while on land and not taking anything with you of value...lol. I'll have to think about it, maybe start out with one of them so he can show the other one how to behave on the water.

You're very close to me then. And we've definitely cruised the same trails. Hope to see you out there!

I would work each of them separately before bringing them both together. I find my Sibes sometimes act differently when they are alone than when they are together. They are both pretty obedient when they are the only dog around. But they get very competitive when each is with another dog.

And when you first take one on the water with you, you may wish to bring another person along with you. It can be difficult to paddle a canoe while trying to focus on a novice dog. Very Happy
