I laugh every time someone says that to me, and I proudly agree with them.

A few years ago my sis-in-law told me I was to obsessed with Mylo gave her the usual grin and said its either the dog(s) or porn. silent My wife agreed the dog was a better choice.

One thing that I hadn't come across in my skimming this topic....Separation Anxiety!
I'm afraid in taking Luna EVERYWHERE with me since I got her that I hadn't conditioned her properly to being alone at home while I'm out for a few hours. That was the one thing I didn't think about before getting her and didn't realize until after the damage was done...now I practice leaving her alone for alittle bit each day but we are still working on it and progress is slow... which is why people need to know this in order to prevent this from happening in the first place !

Advice for a new owner - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Advice for a new owner   Advice for a new owner - Page 2 EmptySun Apr 08, 2012 2:04 pm

I wanted a husky my whole life and did a decent amount of research before i got one, i also searched for about 3 months for the perfect one for me. But i honestly don't think researching can fully prepare someone for a husky. Everything that you read about that sounds scary is totally different when you have an emotional attachment to your dog....
Grooming: you could groom him for hours and you don't really notice how long you've been brushing, you just notice how your husky is cooperating with you and being so well mannered or in my case, smiling a lot. They long for you to touch them and are happy when you do.
Hyperactive: That varies per dog and their environment. My huskies are very very calm... now ive seen some that bounce off the walls, so hyper ones do exist.
Clothing: be prepared to make clothing color decisions based on the color of your huskies fur and what will show fur the least.
Fur Control: if you are thinking of getting a husky, start stocking up on lint rollers now! You've fly through them faster than diapers! Invest in a very good quality vacuum (i have a Dyson Animal vac) and know how to disassemble and reassemble that thing b/c the fur will clog it up at times and you will have to maintenance it! One suggestion i have about vacuums is look for refurbished ones. My Dyson is a refurbished one and ive had it for about 5 years... ive had to take it apart and unclog areas i didnt know existed but it's still going strong, which most people can't say about their vacuums. And be prepared to vacuum/swiffer daily (or right before you have company come over at least)
Furniture: I have to have Fur Free Zones and that is my furniture. Living room seating is all leather, so that my guests dont have to deal with the fur when they come over. And it's not just the fur you have to think of, its the dander. It will make fabrics dirty in all the places they touch.
Potty Clock: this statement is true for anyone who is thinking of getting a dog. Know that your life and decisions will now be dictated by the potty clock and how long it has been since the dogs have been out and when you MUST return home to let them out. You cant go out and get trashed and crash at a friends house.... b/c someone has to be able to let the dog out.

I could go on for days, but that is enough for now. If you want to experience husky life first hand, go stay with someone who has a husky and do evrything 1st hand.... then decide.

Advice for a new owner - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Advice for a new owner   Advice for a new owner - Page 2 EmptySun Apr 08, 2012 3:45 pm

Ugh I relate to all this, anyone I meet will know I have a husky because they will see it on the background of my phone and say "omg is this your dog, I've always wanted a husky!" I immideately respond "research them first." I am always talking about her and showing her off and my friends always get annoyed I can't just stay out all night or "have to go home to my dogs" I tell them you don't understand, my husky is my child and I can't just leave her alone...

I have gotten really lucky though.. Aside from her pulling out some drip systems, eating the mud under the grass and stealing my moms stuffed animal decorations, reading glasses and her excited peeong... Kiara is very calm and doesn't dig or do any major damage in or outside... She doesn't chew on stuff or try to escape out the backyard and I leave her un-crated in my room w my min pin and they do very well and behave.

Needless to say I had a high school friend for like 10 years and we lived together last year when kiara was 1 and she escaped about 3/4 times do to her irresponsibility leaving the door or gate open.. The one time I was gone from 8-5pm and Kiara got out around 11 and my roommate and her bf didn't even inform me until I got home at 5.30/6... She actually was kind of laughing when she told me for some reason... "oh yea by the way kiara is gone w a smirk on her face and I was like "are you kidding" she's like "no" I was furious, my stomach was in knots and luckily the local police station had her and said she was loose since morning. I was like "really u couldn't even send me a text or look for her..." she had a child too and pretty much had the same parenting ability and care as she had for my dog... It was sad to see. Needless to say I kicked her out and we are no longer friends. She knew my dog was my life and not to mention more expensive than her car. True what they say, you never know soemone till u live w them.

Oh God, I know, right? After kicking my former roommate out, he left the door open while loading his stuff and my pup padded his furry butt outside (to his credit, he held back for 20 mins, apparently) and I flipped out. The first thing I did when I had a new roommate move in was put a lock on the basement door, so that nobody but me could let him out during the day. Ugh, I still hear that sentence in my head "Fenrir won't run off. He's a good dog!"

Ya people scare me how stupid they are. My friend had a roommate who was high and left the door open and his dog ran out and got hit by a car and died.... And his mom still let the guy live there, not paying rent. People are crazy.

Totally true. I don't let ANYONE live with me for these reasons. I had a roommate that had a boxer mix that was sweet, until she locked him in the garage with our dogs. He put several wounds on our SMALL dogs (I was at school). When I bitched her out about it, she just said "Oh, I knew he would be ugly to them, but I was tired of him being in the house". Not to meantion he ate a hole in our wood/screen door.

Room mates suck.

It may sound mean, but if my GF (We've been together so long, we may as well be married) EVER told me, "It's me or the Huskies" I'd have to say "There's the door." I WILL not get rid of my dogs. They are my heart, my soul, and in most cased, my lifeline to sanity.
