PostSubject: Spaying while in heat?   Spaying while in heat? EmptyMon Apr 02, 2012 9:35 am

Well, it looks like we procrastinated too long. We were planning on having Kira spayed this week and now this weekend she came into heat. I was planning on a 6 month cycle but looks like she is on a 4 1/2 or 5 month cycle. She turned 2 in January ( we just got her in October). We really don't want to endure the 3-4 weeks of drips everywhere and also risk pregnancy. She also exhibited false pregnancy symtoms last time that were cute at first but drove us nuts later:) Should we wait until her heat is over or go ahead and have it done now. There are risks either way.

I would wait until it's over. They have those doggie diaper thing's for girls that are in heat. Just keep an extra good eye on her that she doesn't wonder off or get in contact with attached male dogs. Smile

Yep, I've heard of those diapers but she'd probably chew that off but I guess its worth a try, Thanks!

Our vet wouldn't do a spay while Isis was in heat. We put a towel down in her crate while she was in there, and used the diapers while she was loose in the house (and out around town).

Probably just wait until her heat is over. Siku got spayed at the tail end of her heat and was fine, but we only did that because we had a pyometra scare.

I did kiara while she was in heat. She didn't get crate trained and no way would she keep a diaper on. Unfortunately it costs more and her vagina is more exposed than a normal dog now which kinda sucks haha

i always heard it was better to wait it out unless a medical issue came up and you had to do it

Thanks for all the feedback. The vets that I have called will all do it now but the last one I called, the lady also said if it were her dog, she would wait in order to avoid complications. It sounds like it is easier on the dog overall if they are not in heat.

I was wondering about this too. My friends Husky keeps on and off bleeding the last 2 weeks, and then yesterday she snapped her tie out and was missing for an hour, could have potentially gotten pregnant if she tied with a dog she met on her travels. Do you think she should go in and get spayed this week?

We had Shiloh spayed right after her first heat. Her heat was 3 weeks long and the longest 3 weeks of my life! We used toddler pullup diapers with holes cut in it for her tail. We took her in for her spay as soon as the bleeding stopped because she had gotten out once for about an hour and we were concerned about pregnancy. She ended up not being pregnant, thank god!

When kiara was in heat she got next door into the neighbors with their pit bull... I was terrified she got pregnant... Woulda been in interresting cross, the sweetest breed mixed w the known to be not so nice breed.

It's odd I called a bunch of vets for prices on getting fixed while in heat and none told me its better to wait...

She probably should. Even if the dog is pregnant, you can still spay it when caught that early.

Shocked Pits are incredibly sweet dogs... one of my favorites. Media and idiot people have destroyed they're fun-loving and happy-go-lucky reputation; just like Dobermans in the 90s and Rottweilers in the 80s...

Well I'm one of the idiot people, after being stalked by a pit a few years ago I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Now a neighbor up the street has a Sweet lil pitty and so far has come after Adobo and I while we were do the Walky Dog thing. Yesterday Beth was walking the the kidz and that same piece of spit came a charging after Biko. Beth was helpless as she had no idea what to do w/o being injured herself. Biko and Adobo held off the SOB until the owner came out for him. Thats strike 2, better not be a strike 3 if I'm with the dog because it will go down violently. Not a threat but a promise. I hate pits, the only reason I refuse to support breed bans is then the slippery slope of what ever the community feels are dangerous.

I always thought it should be after. I got Maggie spayed before her first heat. Not dealing with that! I had to go through hoops with my breeder to allow it. I was like you gave me the runt, I am not showing her or breeding her. He finally said okay!

Yea... I don't think all pits are bad but even my personal experience at dog parks... Pitbulls and terriers were the main cause of problems. It was quite annoying. If your dog is mean, don't come to the dog park!

couldn't agree more. I have been bite by aggressive pit but let me tell you, the owners piss me off more. I have never kicked or hit a dog before it my life. I was screaming hit the dog, maggie came and growled at this dog. He then went after maggie. Oh that was it I threw the dog off her. maggie was yelping. The bite didn't break the skin and maggie was fine. however, the owners pissed me off. Instead of okay dog bite me she told me that we need to toughen up at a dog park, and she is not leaving. I took matters in my own hands. Oh maggie's sister owner was there as well. We called animal control. Sorry I just got bite at a park for just walking in. scratch . I guess it was the second offence of this dog, she was suppose to get him fixed and didn't.

Anywho this is the only time it has ever happened to me by a pit.

I thought dogs were suppose to be fixed before being allowed in Dog parks. At least here that is the rule.

If her bleeding isn't to bad, you can use little boy underwear and turn them around backwards for a tail hole. Looks so funny, but it works! haha
That's when we always did with our dobie. She had von Willebrand's disease and we didn't want to risk spaying her.
Problem dogs are fads, once the pit bull fad is over, then the breed can be restored, just like the other fads before it.

Yes, I think we've all but decided to wait. She loves being outside in fenced yard so we blocked doggy door off and keep her contained to one room when inside. I thought about toddler Pampers with hole cut for tail which might work if she didn't chew them off. At least she could be around us more.

I'd definitely wait before spaying her. If you can, wait for about a month after she's gone out of heat to let her hormones return back to normal.
