The question comes up from time to time about GPS tracking for our Houdini dogs.  The end result is that Whistler has been the option of choice - except for those of us who live in areas where there is no cell service.  

Garmin has gotten into the Dog Training Business with their Upland Series but that requires line of sight between you and the dog - which means if he's gone it's not a lot of good.  However, they also have added GPS related devices that use MURS / GMRS (these are radio devices) to  track your dog from much further away even if you don't have cell service.  The TT-15 dog device looks like a decent option but must be paired with a Garmin compatible device.  The 'bundle' is reported to work for up to nine miles (but I'd question that considering the 'line of sight' requirement for VHF radio signals.)  A pricey option but better than none ...

Another option is the AngeleKerry Wireless system that uses GPS to track the dog and allow a selected radius of 'free travel'.  Note that AngelaKerry is a trademark of Shenzhen City HongYun Cross Border E-Commerce Co., Ltd so there's no US support.

OCEven appear to be the AngelaKerry unit - just rebranded.  Again, no contact information.

I'll continue to look for GPS / wireless options but I'm not holding my breath for cost / effective options in the near future.

There is a type that doesnt require cell service uses the same technology as the emergency beacons for the wilderness. Its been very popular with the ranchers that turn cows loose. Not sure about the cost or brand or anything. I had a garmin like 5 years ago that worked great.... on the prairie where its flat and tree less. Worked less good when there was thick brush or elevation differences.

@lostmaniac I'd sure appreciate if you could find that for me, I've been looking since I moved out here and the initial versions were all cell based - which obviously doesn't work; the garmin looks interesting but 1) ow, the price!! 2) oh, the hills!

For me, GPS and some type of receiver would be the working tools but they have to be affordable.
