That vest is awesome! Do you know where they got it? I want to get one for Ghost, she should be certified fairly soon.

Got an email last night, Megan is quite distraught but Seamus will be returning to us. In true Border Collie fashion, he has picked up a very bad obsessive habit. He now is obsessive with shadows and tries to bite them. Unfortunately biting the shadows has lead him to bite the kids 3 times. He will be returning to us sometime this week... At which point I'm not sure what we will need to do. Very emotional night Sad

The head tech where I work has that problem with her ranch dog (he's a German shepherd mix). She said what's really helped is giving him a specific job everyday, and her son has been taking him to Big Valley Dog Training, and teaching him protection work, says that it really calmed down his shadow obsession, not completely though. He has never gotten aggressive about it though. So yes it can definitely be worked on; and knowing Kristina, she'll work with Seamus way more than Holly (my coworker)has worked with Max. I hope Seamus can be returned to his family at some point Sad

Have been researching all day, seems like there's little to no hope of truly beating this without the aid of medication. It's called CCD- Canine Compulsion Disorder. Found a post on a BC forum where they had the same issue with their younger BC and a mixture of low doses of prozac and comicalm made it manageable enough to work in behavioral management... Sent her the link to that but i'm not holding out for her to keep him and try medication now. She's really got the kids at risk at the moment.

Either way- Hopefully my vet will just take what I have to say seriously (there are a lot of posts about how vets don't want to medicate or don't "believe" it) and prescribe those medications. Then with some behavior modification hopefully we can wean him off but I won't hold on to that... As long as it's a very low dosage and doesn't change him I think we can live with that.

That sucks! Hopefully, you can get the obsession under control. Are you planning on keeping him if it works or will you be looking to find him another home?

What causes this anyway, out of boredom?

We're not sure what our next step is here. If there is a next home, they will have to be very BC knowledgeable and capable of handling such an issue. No kids either. At least not young. But- that will also be the 5th place he has been... And I'm not ok with that. It's going to take a lot of thinking...

There has been research to suggest it has genetic predispositions but can also be caused by environment. So if they're bored or stressed or not being challenged, have the predisposition or were introduced to obsessive behaviors young (which he was- his idiot original owner thought it was hilarious that he would chase the laser light, and attack the hose, and go after flash lights) they can develop CCD.
