This post is mostly a vent dedicated to Kavik living up to his nickname, Kavik the Havoc.

I woke up this morning around eight to Kavik's crying and find that he's peed and pooped in his kennel. I took him out to do his business and bring him right back in. I gave him his breakfast so he would be occupied while I cleaned his kennel, yet he pooped on the carpet when my back was turned. I put the cleaned bottom tray of his kennel outside to dry and I went to clean the carpet and he somehow went on the deck without my knowing and pooped again. While I was cleaning up that he knocked over a plant inside, spilling dirt everywhere. After another bathroom break I cleaned up the dirt then found him chewing on my expensive bite guard! That thing was way up on my dresser, how the heck did he get it? It's not one of those cheap ones from the pharmacy, I actually had it fit and molded by a dentist, so I was extra ticked. Just because he turned three months today doesn't give him the right to wreak havoc, and this all happened within an hour

How often do you take him out at night? When Karli was that age I was still getting up halfway through the night to take her out. And now that I don't do that, she poops twice every morning, within half an hour of each other. Are you feeding him right before bed time? Because remember, what goes in much come out. Karli really hasn't chewed much on any of our stuff, but we always have a kong or frozen wash cloth or something she likes to chew on near her. Trust me, you can't turn your back on these guys!!!

I feed him dinner at 4:30pm and his last chance to go outside is at 9:00pm then I put him straight to bed in his kennel. He's been really good about sleeping through the night for the last two weeks without problems. I take him right out in the morning, between 7 and 8 am, he pees twice and poops. Then I bring him inside for breakfast and afterwards its right outside to poop again. The same goes for chewing on things that aren't his. He's been really good since day one about chewing on his own things, except he thinks any wood furniture is fair game when I'm not looking. It's like he woke up this morning and decided he would make my morning crazy.

Edit: Now he's peed by the door just as I was taking him out It looks like I'll have to start taking him out every 15 minutes like I did during the first few weeks.

I took Kale out 3-4 times a night till he was 4 months, just because I know that males don't express their whole bladder at once. (he never did, even as a puppy). Then once in the middle of the night till he was 6-7 months. I'd take him out within 15 seconds after eating or drinking, and every 40 mins during the day till he was 5-6 months, then started to gradually decrease the frequency so he gradually got used to holding it. He now gives me the "potty stare" lol he's only had 3-4 accidents in the house and I got him at 5 weeks. I also leashed him to me when I was busy so I could immediately see the signs of having to go, sniffing, twirling, etc.

Dang, Brooke, that's dedication! I thought I was crazy for taking my dog out every 2 hours in the middle of the night, 30 minutes after meals, and 30 minutes after heavy indoor play time and immediately after he wakes up from ANY nap he takes, in or out of his crate.

We recently taught him how to use the bells hanging on the door knob on the door to let us know when he wants to go out. He hasn't "abused" yet. What I mean is that every time he rings the bells, even if it's 4 times in one hour, he does pee EVERY time.

He did have 2 accidents in the house yesterday, so I don't know what his deal was. He knows to run to the door when he needs to go out. Shrug.

You aren't alone, Anakin has been going on a rampage the last two days. Today he was good up until and hour ago...I admit a few semi non friendly thoughts crossed my mind and I had to remind myself he is just a innocent cute little puppy.

LOL! I totally was! Course I was living at my parents house at the time so I had to be diligent. It was easier to get up and take him out all those times, than hear about it and get scolded later lol But it worked!

I agree with everything Brooke said - we had to do this with our male.

Oh boy I actually had to have everyone write down on a chart everytime they took Balon out he was so bad, I didn't think he would ever be trained lol. But here he is at 11 months and totally reliable. YET we still take him out more then most dogs just to be sure!

I got a question... does havoc have biting problems... im just curious casue him and koda are really close in age.. and koda is biting alot... i know its play but it hurts.. the screaming seems to be helping a little but its still alot..if he gets bored with toys he goes for hands and arms..

Eric, just stand up and walk away when he does that, even go where he can't see you. Any reinforcement will allow it to keep happening.

He does, but not as bad as he used to. Just replace your hand with a toy or, like Megan said, stand up and ignore him. When Kavik gets really bad, I flop him on his side and hold him there until he calms down. My Pyrenees did that do him when she'd had enough so I learned it from her.

Be careful Alpha Rolling. I'd rather not force a dog, especially a puppy, to listen. I'd rather teach them to using positive methods.

I don't alpha roll (I assume you mean full back and displaying their stomach). I only do it when I'm home alone with him, never in public or around other dogs, and all I do is put him on his side, not his back. And I only do it when I can't take his jumping up and biting anymore, not for any other reason.

That's alpha rolling, same thing. Forcing a dog to listen, holding them down. I'm just cautioning, not saying you can't do it.

I agree with Brooke - take a look at the thread I jut updated. You will see why pinning/alpha rolling is bad.

It can cause fear aggression, and distrust. Dogs doing it to dogs is different than humans doing it to dogs. You can do any training method you want, we are just cautioning you.

Ok. I've heard of alpha rolling being bad, especially when done to counter aggression or warning growls. I've been careful with it and use it sparingly, without any scolding and never around others in a place where everything excites him. I'll take your and be more careful about it.

Another thought just popped into my mind guys...you haven't had the pup for very long right? Maybe he's just now settled down into your house. When we first got Karli, she was a dream pttying outside for the first week. Then one day, out of the blue, she peed in the house three times and pooped twice. Completely threw us off because she had been doing so good. And it was mentioned here that probably what happened was she became so comfortable with us that she wasn't afraid to do those things in the house anymore. So that's something to keep in mind, the older they get, the more they're going to test you to make sure your rules are still the same.

I hadn't thought of that. I've had him for a little over a month so it's possible he's just now getting comfortable. I thought I had a little more time until he started pushing my buttons, at least until he hit his teenage stage. Oh, boy. I'm just glad today is over. He was a PETA. Being the only one looking after him makes things a bit more stressful, but I just keep reminding myself of my experience with Jewel and how worth it having him will be in the long run. I had gotten so used to my calm and collected girl who had toned down due to age and Kavik is a little whirlwind of crazy.

We will make it through this time of puppyhood together and look back on this at laugh :p. That's what I tell myself anyway Anakin has done a lot of what you mentioned, I'm also the only one who watches him :p

Well, I haven't posted almost at all this weekend...for good reason...
I have 2 crates to scrub out. Ahsoka pooed all over both of them. One she was only in for 2 hours, and I had to give her a bath, coz she had crap rubbed all over her. It was covering the toy that was in there with her. I swear she wiped it onto her paw and smeared it all over the walls.

She's been peeing where she sleeps (even in an x-pen with a bed in it, she pissed on the bed and laid in it). I take her out CONSTANTLY! I've started limiting her water intake now that her urination is more normal. That is helping, instead of letting her drink freely, I offer it to her with meals and when waking up from a nap, and after hard playing. After all of, she gets to go outside and potty. I usually end up taking her back out 15 mins later too.

I think the worst of the worms are over - haven't seen a single hint they still exist. Still monitoring poo like the poo police. And she'll get another dose of dewormer next week. Everybody got dewormed in my house. Well, the dogs.
So at least the crates aren't poo AND worm covered... :s

I swear they have to smear it on purpose! He "painted" his kennel on Thursday and Friday. I'm nervous about putting him in there at this point. I even had to move him out of a carpeted room, he was managing to paint the floors somehow.

That is disgusting... I keep having to wait for a non-frozen daylight hour to wash the crates... my hose spigget freezes if its too cold (go figure) and there's no light on the side of the house the hose is at. And I work graveyard, so I sleep through most of the daylight...

I've never met a dog that enjoyed smearing itself in its own feces. My other dogs stay clear of their own poop. I thought crate training naturally detered them from pooping and peeing where they were laying... Ahsoka seems to only want to pee where she's sleeping. WTF

Lately I usually wake up wondering what mess will he creat today. He seems to have started not just potty issues but mauling plants, blankets, remotes,chairs, socks,etc etc.
