So you all know of Siku's little pyometra stunt and then having to get spayed. Well now Elara is acting like her butt hurts, keeps chasing her tail and whining, and has some freaking white discharge from her vulva too. I don't know what's going on. She can't possibly have pyometra too! I'm so lost right now and about out of money. I made a vet appointment for her at 3:10, so we'll see what's wrong. She's entered in a show this weekend. I really don't want to spay her too. I'm freaking hating life right now.

Well good news, it was just an anal gland problem and she probably has a bit of vaginitis which is causing the discharge. So only $120 later and with some probiotics for her soft stool, we're good. I took her to a different vet, one I used a while back with my cats and when Siku was a puppy. Elara loved everyone there! She was being such a sweetheart.

Though I do wish I could go to the vets just once and not spend over $100.

The money part sucks but glad she is OK.

Do you know how to express glands yourself? When Koda had his tummy issues and when we were trying to get Rogue on a food she could tolerate, I would do their glands once or twice a week so they didn't get any issues.

I tried before going to the vet, but I must be doing something wrong. My mom knows how to do it, but she's still on vacation. She told me how to do it over the phone, but it didn't work. If she looks like she's having the same problem again, I'm going to have her show me how to do it.

Sara I looked up videos how to do it, read every article I could find... everything! But I couldn't figure it out until my boss showed me at work. Now it's like nothing. Ask your mom when she gets back, it's worth knowing how to do!

LOL, is it weird it's not gross to me at all? You literally squeeze just outside of their butthole and to where it kind of looks like it's popping out and then it will squirt (so look out!) or if it's really gross it'll have poop pretty much fall out.

I watched when Ginger had her anal glands expressed....she made a sound like I've never heard before but she still managed to stay calm and still and let them do it...but man! It was a stink like I've never smelled before! I gagged the whole way home! I could never do it!!

Ok, yep, I would NOT be able to do that! Groomers....here we come..LOL! I'd love to know how the groomers have done that to Mya is the past without her snapping at them. I'm hoping they used a muzzle!!!

I have to do that at work a lot. I usually just do kennel tech duties, which is taking boarding and daycare dogs out for potty/play breaks and cleaning kennels and stuff, but if there is a large amount of dogs in for bathing and grooming I help the bathers and we always empty anal glands for small dogs only unless its specifically requested for on larger dogs. Its SO nasty. Once I had a dog with really full glands and it sprayed EVERYWHERE. I almost puked because it got on my bare arm. >_>

A lot of dogs have to have another person hold their face while the groomer does it. Koda can be touchy about his bum so I have to scruff if I have to do him, Rogue doesn't care. Generally unless a bigger dog has had a diarrhea issue for a few days their glands should take care of themselves. Worst dogs with anal glands from my experience.. lhasa apsos and mini schnauzers.. ew...

Yeah it doesn't gross me out at all either. We have a whole new staff at work and they're all grossed out by it! They put on gloves and grab paper towels and the whole 9 yards (the dogs are 99.9% of the time getting baths as well so it's done in the tub) by the time they're "ready" to do it, it could have been done and over with! That's what soap is for lol

Yeah it's most certainly not the most pleasant smell in the world. lol

If the dogs have soft poop, I make sure to add a little fiber to their food to make sure they empty their glands when they poop. So far, no problems here. Fingers crossed!

I've seen Frosti "scoot" before, so I give them both some dried sweet potato as treats the next few days. Seems to resolve itself by the next day...

lol. Elara smelled great after they did it! They sprayed a nice perfume on her after they did it. Now I'm glad they did! It's funny, I never remember smelling anything when they did that for my cat and I was right there. Holding down a hissing, growling cat to do the procedure does not look fun. I did not even attempt to help out. I'm such a bad mommy, but I didn't feel like getting bit!

Oh and btw, we got stuff for her diarrhea and of course once she gets home she has a normal poop. I swear, my dogs are just trying to make me spend extra money!

Hate doing it, but glad I know how so I don't have to pay for it. Kitty never has had an issue, but I end up having to express Luka's once a year. She always looks so sad once I'm finished.

I work as a vet tech at a clinic and someone gets sprayed by anal glands at least once a day. The big scared dogs often release them as we lift em up on the table! WORST SMELL EVER!!
