so my boyfriend and i are leaving on Monday morning for a 3 hour drive to Northern Wisconsin to stay with his family and stuff at their cabin on the lake, I'm really nervous about taking the dogs, but obviously they're coming no matter what. Any recomendations for us camping out there for a whole 5 days Embry gets anxious in the car, anything i should give him to calm him down? i'm going to give them frontline before we leave so i don't come home with gross dogs. it's on the lake, but we tested out their swimming skills at the river today and they are great swimmers haha. anything else i should worry about? for sleeping, we're going to be sleeping on the blow up mattress in the back of our Element, my boyfriend wants us to crate the dogs, outside of the car not happening! ahhh, i'm too stressed for this

I would be totally stressed also, but don't worry it will be ok. I have no experience whatsoever with camping so I can't give you any tips except that I WOULD NOT leave my dogs crated outside of the car either. No way! I wouldn't sleep!!! You said you were going to his parents cabin? Can't they sleep in the cabin in their crates???

Just keep them leashed, last thing you want to do is lose them in the north woods.

yeah we're getting a combination lock to put on their kennel also so his younger cousins can't let them out, last thing i need is to lose my dogs in the woods 3 hours from home.

Just watch out for bears. We stay in the same cabin every year, about 30min north of Minocqua and have seen bears on our walks. Dogs seem to scare them away though! I would write your boyfriends parents cabin address on a piece of paper and tape it to their dog tags. That way they have up to date ID without spending money on different tags. Have a great time! You can't beat northern Wisconsin!

Bears are quite shy critters and prefer to go in the opposite direction where your going. Just stay the hell away from the cubs if there are any, thats when mama bear can't really have an attitude.

Speaking of momma bears...did any of you see the animal planit special where the siberian husky saved his owners life by keeping a momma bear from climbing the tree to get him? They were out there for hours before helped arrived and the dog wouldn't let the bear go after it's owner. The dog didn't have one scratch on him. |

Melissa, it made me cry! He has a sled team and all the dogs hightailed for home except this one dog who refused to leave and stood infront of the tree so the bear wouldn't go after his human. I think the program is called "An animal saved my life" They had several animal stories. I loved them all!

If you click on the link I provided, it does give you an option to watch it on Tvrage.com. You will probably have to download something though. I'm sure NatGeo will rerun it in the near future.

Just got back from our vacation in WY. FL to WY and back are LONG drives! We stuffed all our stuff in the back of the SUV and put the back seats down for the girls to sit on. Elara did great, but you could tell Siku needed to get out and run! When we got to our second hotel she did zoomies for a long time. Felt so bad cause we were on the 2nd floor and it was about midnight. lol. But they got used to the drive after a while. We didn't camp, so no tips for that. Oh and we used Happy Traveler calming stuff for them at first since Siku cries in the car sometimes and Elara gets a bit car sick. _________________ -Sara

My girls loved camping...well except for Shania. She complained about EVERYTHING. There were bugs, the ground was hard, the leaves made noise....I actually had to leave the backdoor of the truck open the last time we went tent camping (trailer had a tree fall on it) so that she could sleep in it. Normally they slept in the tent with me. They had a self inflatable dog bed (though still stole mine) and I would hook the zipper shut with the leash.

Oh my! I'm sorry for your miserable ride home but it looks like they are enjoying themselves in the picture. I take it you didn't see any bears?

Im sorry but your ride home was funny to me since we have been there before with our two. We go camping quite often and find that roxy wont eat her food unless we do an extreme hike where she burns off alot of energy etc... Also we find its easier just to put the dogs in a tent with you. When not sleeping we use long tie outs to let them rome the campsite a little. To alleviate any probs with the ride you need to ware them out as much as possible and stop occasionally to let them relieve themselves to avoid the explosive disaster im to familiar with.

| They look like they are having a blast. Lucky for us, our guy is an amazing traveler. He only gets fussy in the car when he needs something. On our 5 hour trip we only mad one stop for food/bathroom/run. Otherwise he just sleeps and/or looks out the windows. If he ever had explosive diarrhea in my car I don't know if I could ever recover....
It's fun to see them in the water. Appa is not a fan of water... |
