Epilepsy in husky Empty
PostSubject: Epilepsy in husky   Epilepsy in husky EmptyMon Feb 01, 2021 8:11 pm

Hi,
Does anyone else own a husky with epilepsy. My dogs has had epilepsy a few years now. He's on medication for it. His fits are down to one in a month lately. He had a fit a couple of days ago but he's not been the same since this fit. He's very quiet, off his food just wants to be alone and sleep. It's not normal. After a fit he normally is back to his normal self within 24 hours. They say they can take 48 hours sometimes to fully recover but he should be by now and seems very scared. Any advice from husky owners of epileptic dogs please. I am phoning vet tomorrow.

Epilepsy drugs have all sorts of side effects. Are you 100% sure it was an Epilepsy fit and not a stroke. My vet thinks splinter has mild Epilepsy, and i have never seen a seizure but he exhibits the after effects. To me it seems more like a stroke, but never anything permanent. Towrds the end of his problem he gets really clingy. I would call tonight if your vet has emergency services.

I have alot of seizure experience, so does spider. Its way scary to watch. I would try a 1:1 cbd:thc (thc-a is better but harder to find) from what ive heard and from testing on jerry, cbd alone doesnt do that much, same thing with thc..

It's epilepsy not a stroke. He's been epileptic since young. He's on meds do has less now. Previously he had cluster fits. Normally he recovers this time he's really subdued. His epilepsy is monitored by my vet and he has regular blood tests. It was not a stroke it was a fit.

He's still very quiet. The vets are not worried about him as one fit in a month is not bad. He just seems vacant. He's not eating much either. Has anyone else on this forum got a husky with epilepsy?. I'm not sure if he's just scared himself this time. It is awful to watch and even worse for him.

Yes hes been checked it was a fit. He's took longer to recover this time that's all. Hence why I wondered if any other husky owners had dogs with epilepsy.

I have an epileptic terrier but its not fits, its transient seizures. Had a long talk with my vet about it yesterday. Its not happening often enough to where i am thinking neurology and medication yet. And thinking back about 3 months ago, when splinter was not back to normal by the 2nd day i did take him in but by the time i got him there he was back to normal.

Hey Lycan,

Search on "seizure" and you'll find several of us here with epilepsy. Lachlan is my boy and we've been through a lot. Good luck.

Hello. My 4.5 year old Tyler had his first seizures 2 days after his first dental cleaning, when he was 3.3 years old. That episode was 3 am,5 am, then 7 am. Vet and I thought that low blood sugar with perhaps too much anesthesia caused the seizures. No meds given. 14 months later, his second dental cleaning with anticonvulsants, less anesthesia, lead to 7 seizures 2 days later. Again no meds. 6 weeks passed and Tyler had his first non dental related seizure. Started him om Keppra (Levetiracetam) 1500mg morning and night. He has had seizures every 5-6 weeks, 2 back to back until this past early Sunday morning when he had 4 maybe 5 seizures back to back to back to back. Scary. 8:30 Sunday morning he had another seizure right after his morning meds with food, followed by another at 10:30. Something has changed. Has anyone gone through this with their husky? Picked up liquid Keppra to administer as soon as possible when these cluster seizures subdue. Hard to know when that is. Vet doesn't seem to be bothered by this change, but I am. Any info would be MUCH appreciated!

I have no experience with husky seizures but members here in the past have posted extensively. If you search seizures you should find information.

PostSubject: Hang in there...   Epilepsy in husky EmptyThu Oct 05, 2023 2:09 pm

Hi Bobby,

Our boy went almost 2.5 year with no seizures until a few weeks ago when he had 2 in the morning a couple hours a part. None since. So weird. We've never been able to find a solid pattern of what might be triggering. He's never had one from October to March. He's been on Phenobarbitol which I understand to be more effective than Keppra but more prone to side effects for some dogs, but he handles it fine. Several times we've used rectally administered liquid valium to rescue him out of clusters. After the recent 2 seizures I needed new meds so I took him to the ER. For rescue they gave me some new sedative similar to valium that's a nasal spray. I think the rectal sticks are better as I would rather not be getting close to his teeth when he's seizing.

Good luck, happy to talk further if I can help.

I'm both sorry and glad to see so many of you folks who have dogs who have had seizures pipe up with comments.

It's never easy when one of our voiceless (Ha? voiceless?) 'kids' isn't feeling right and it's always good to have someone else say "I've been where you are ..." and sometimes that's all it takes to help relieve a situation.

PostSubject: Re: Epilepsy in husky   Epilepsy in husky EmptyThu Dec 14, 2023 4:02 pm

Sad news on my poor boy Tyler. He started seizing the day of his shot appointment, called the vet to cancel, Tylers 1 seizure turned into 2 while I'm on phone and asked for Vet Dr. to get on phone. By the time The Dr was on the phone. Tyler was having his 4th seizure. Tyler's last episode of cluster seizures was on October 1st so I wasn't that worried but asked the vet if moving Tyler while seizing to get him to vet was Ok. He suggested waiting till seizures stopped. They didn't stop. Called back saying were rushing Tyler in. He had about 12 seizures in a row. By the time we got to the vet Tyler wasn't breathing. 20 minutes of trying to resuscitate him to no avail. Tyler died on December 12,2023. Tyler would of been 5 on December 28th. I'm beyond sad, ;3rd dog I've lost this year. PLEASE PLEASE if your husky has seizure issues, don't wait while they are happening. Have something ready to put him/her on, we used a drop clothe, to carry your loved on to the car even if your loved on is still seizing. We are trying to upload photos of Tyler, reddish brown and white, along with Sydney, black, brown and white, my husky mixed who died On Ausgust 29, 2023 .

What a horrible thing to go through, the loss of so many in one year plus having to see one go through such a struggle at the end. Many thoughts of healing for your wounded heart in all of this.
