Chewing pine cones, dirt, mulch..... and more Empty
PostSubject: Chewing pine cones, dirt, mulch..... and more   Chewing pine cones, dirt, mulch..... and more EmptySun Apr 09, 2023 11:27 am

We have a decent fenced in yard, the pups love the run but also seem to like to chew everything?

Has any run across problems with eating pine cones? mulch? I have already looked into bushes, plants that they can not eat. They seem to love to dig up roots of the trees. Here in NC the roots will grow close to top due to the soil being clay.

I want to give them the freedom of running the yard but I worry about everything they eat.

If you've checked out all the plants you should be fine there.  Watch the mulch as many of them use cocoa - the source of chocolate and is poisonous ... however coco coir fiber is safe.

Long ago I lived in Houston and the apartment complex had pine trees all around. I had a black lab who was always carrying a pine cone around with her and from time to time she'd take a break and chew on the thing. The only problem I noticed was that if she had a 'fresh' pine cone she might get some pine gum on the fur around her muzzle. I did a quick look on the web and "it" says that some dogs may get an upset stomach from the gum and the points on the pine cone might scratch mouth / tongue / gullet but nothing I saw indicated any serious issues.

Obviously '...cides' (pesticide, rodenticide, etc) can be problematic.  Some can cause sickness (and death) others can cause allergic reactions, non-fatal just irritating.

Thank you on the heads up on the mulch, I will definitely watch for that when we get more mulch. I have not noticed sap on pine cones but I will look.

It seems only one of the dogs seems to have a sensitive stomach and he is usually looking to eat everything. My daughter and he will move to a new place this weekend, and she has no landscaping for him to munch on. thank goodness.
