Mama Husky aggressively singling out pup Empty
PostSubject: Mama Husky aggressively singling out pup    Mama Husky aggressively singling out pup EmptyTue Feb 14, 2023 1:10 pm

Hello! I have a pack of 8 huskies; mom, dad and 6 (male) pups. They will be turning 14 weeks in a few days. I've noticed Nami (mom) will single out the oldest pup, Rusty, pretty aggressively. At first I let it go, which is probably my fault. In my defense though, I thought she was teaching him manners; meaning he's playing too rough, teaching him biting too hard hurts, etc. But she's gotten progressively worse. Any time he runs indoors/outdoors, minding his own business, playing with his brothers she goes after him. She'll shove him to the ground and pin him and bite his face, neck- everywhere. If he tries to escape, she doubles down. And now it's to the point where some of the other pups will join mom in torturing him. I feel so bad for him. I now separate them and carry him away from her, and she jumps at me and tries to bite him and grab him. I don't know what to do in this situation. I don't feel like it's normal. Poor guy often sits by himself because she won't let him near the others a lot of the time.

Does anyone have any insight or suggestions please?
*sidenote - he is the biggest pup if that means anything.

My first and primary question: Is she drawing blood?

If she's not then she's seeing something in his behaviour that you're not.... maybe a video of what's happening would be of help.

I have my GSD who's pushing 5 months, my Alaskan will pin him, correct hime to the point that it sounds like he's being murdered ... but 15 minutes later he's back in Avalanche's face again. Now Avalanche is a 12+ year old male and Zeus is a 5 month old male so I expect some controversy (more later than now, but I hope not) so far it doesn't appear to be dominance based but I expect that will come in time. At the age of your pups, true dominance is probably not an issue.

From your description and my far off view, I'd have to say that she's trying to correct something and you're interfering hence her attempts to jump at him and grab him.

She could be teaching him independence which with that many puppies they will all be hard pressed to learn any other way. Being the largest he's probably been more of a bully about going after food and will need to be pushed off it to ensure others get food. Frankly, 8 is a lot of puppies to create balance with. She will try. If this pup is somehow disrupting harmony in the group she will try to restore it. When you go from having dogs to having a legit pack it can be brutal for one or even a few if they don't fall in line. While they are all family a pack mind can turn dangerous pretty fast.

Ive had the pack mentality disaster. But if it is that much of an issue you may want to consider rehoming him or the potential for a pack of 7 and a pack of 1. If the others are joining in, you may already have a big problem.
