This is our Sky Empty
PostSubject: This is our Sky    This is our Sky EmptyTue Sep 24, 2019 3:14 pm

Hello my wife and I rescued Sky about 3 weeks ago. She is almost 3 year old female that came from environment where she did not get consistent attention. We both work so Sky is by herself all day. We do set aside time for her in the morning and evening for excercize and interactions. We love her very much but we can’t bring her in the house as we have 3 cats and 2 parrots. She has been known to kill both cats and chickens. So far Sky has been kept outdoors by herself. I feel like this isn’t fair to her her but she is in a much better situation than she was. Is there any advice for me regarding upcoming winter? I am considering bringing her in at night and crating her so she can be with us while protecting the other animals. Thanks for input.

Where are you? Crate inside or a well insulated doghouse with a heat lamp. Mine prefer being out but right around 0 or in high wind they want in. Last winter we had a few -20 days (and colder nights) and at -20 all mine were having issues primarily with thier feet. Of my 4 the german shepherd handles the cold the best.

I am in SE Idaho and we can get sub zero cold snaps it is also very windy. It sounds like I will need to get her a new dog house with a lamp. At the Monterey have one of those igloo dog houses. Previous owner used to keep her in a kennel outside with straw and a tarp over the kennel. Good information about temperature ranges. We are still learning as this is our first husky.

A dog can freeze to death in a plastic igloo dog house. Huskies are pretty cold tolerant and an insulated dog house will be enough to get her through. They tend to dislike being out because they would rather be with their people than be in a climate controlled area. We never brought any of our short haired hunting dogs in in the winter because we didn't want them to get used to too much warmth. It would disrupt their acclimation to the cold.

My husky Skye won’t come inside even if I held a t bone steak at the door. She happily lives outside on our farm with a kennel but she very rarely goes in there unless it’s raining. Even in the snow she will dig a hole bury herself in the snow. And I live in Hertfordshire Uk.

Ended up getting an insulated dog house and a small plastic heater that sits on the floor(75 watt). She seems to like it.

Temps are a funny thing. Ive always wondered about husky mixes and hypothermia. Ive had squirt out in single digit temps and she will go swimming then shake off and go on a walk then go swimming again then hang in the truck while i go grocery shopping. I would swear she doesnt get cold

It is probably for my own state of mind but there are actually states that are limiting dogs to a half hour outside and if it is exceeded you will be fined.
