| Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and hoping for a little guidance and advice. My family is currently searching for a new family dog and our heart is set on a husky. While this will not be our first time owning a dog this will be our first husky. We have done the research and understand the time, attention and exercise a Siberian Husky will require. My question is about their coat. While I desperately want a husky, I most definitely do not want a wooly. I honestly do not mean any disrespect to wooly owners, they are beautiful dogs just not what I am personally looking for.
My question is: How old is a Siberian Husky puppy before you can, without a doubt, tell if he is wooly? |

| Usually within a few weeks of age, their coat will be thicker/fluffier and they will have feathers around the ears and cheeks. Feathers = longer hairs. There is a old post somewhere in here on woolies and how soon you can tell if one will be a wooly. I'd try and find it for you but it talks mostly about the cons of woolies and those who breed them, and just touches briefly on how soon you can tell, which is essentially what I said at the beginning of my post. While two huskies with standard coats can produce a wooly (if they both carry the gene) one helpful hint for you would be to stay away from litters/breeders where one (or both) parents is a wooly. |

| I have a wooly and I fully understand your concern. Ami's cosy maintenance is a nightmare. Top keep his coat free of debris, no knots or mats, he would have too news an indoor dog who only goes out on a leash. He has 4 acres of woods and lawn to tromp and this, he's always got something I his fur. Now that snow is coming, he had ice balls between his toes, soon it will be fist sized ice balls in his leg feathers. I've resorted to trimming his feathers back in winter just to keep him comfortable. Also, once wet, takes forever to dry.
I would follow Jimmy's advice and look for tufting around tbd ears and feathers around the legs. |

| Very difficult to tell with a pup this young. He really should be with his mom and littermates until 8 weeks old. There's a lot of social development that occurs in the litter that he won't receive otherwise. |
