Can 2 male huskies or a male husky and a male malamute coexist together happily? I have heard that males of these breeds do not get along very well but want to know if that is true or not.

I don't see why not.

I have three males in my home (Husky, Dalmatian, & Yorkie). All get along, but are closely monitored due to size difference.

i have had more issues with my females then I have had with my male hanging around with other males. He is pretty laid back, but I have 1 super alpha female and one that is learning that attitude quickly.

I've seen way more issues with two females than two males. But obviously, it all depends on the personality of the two dogs. Two highly dominate males wouldn't do well, but if you had two laid back males or one that was pretty submissive, no issues. I think I'd get another male before another female.

2 male dogs are fine. Actually I agree with everyone it is most thhe time it is 2 females. I don't think it is the case with sibes but in malamutes same sex aggression can become an issue in the breed. Although when I heard about that, I first thought females, males are primary the same sex aggression. This is only with malamutes, I don't really think it has to do with sibes at all. My parents have 2 males in their house, they had 3 there was never an issue until I bring maggie over. Then they all want the pretty girl!

Maggie can be with any sex, she is a pretty calm sweet go lucky dog.

I have 2 male Siberians one is 11 months and one is 3.5 years and they get along perfectly fine, we've never had a fight or scuffle. I definitely agree with 2 females being harder. My 2.5 year old female is more dominant then both my boys

I've only had issues with having 3 females in one house. I wanted to get a male rather then get another female. But my family prefers females.

That's what I said too! Asia kinda just fell into our lap Razz But yes, I agree with everybody. I think that 2 females would cause more of a problem. Asia is now starting to stand up to Mya. Not good, but they need to work out their issues and I think Mya respects her somewhat. Kody on the other hand is the biggest sweetheart and is ruled by BOTH girls! Total pushover! Razz

Our two boys get along fine, they have had a few scuffles, some major some minor, but it is expected with 2 or more dogs living in the same household. We have a mum (Halli-5.5 year), Dad (Brooklyn3.5 years) & Son (Compton-1.5 years) scenario, so they have their own family hierarchy going on. Once Compton got old enough and started standing up to Brooklyn and tried taking his place the scuffles got bigger, but they were usually over something stupid like food, or a toy. We got both our boys desexed and it calmed them down (not straight away), we haven't really had any scuffles between them since then. They do love each other though, they would hate to admit it, but you can't separate them, they both sleep under our bed next to each other, Brooklyn even shares his spot at the top of the stairs with him. Halli is the boss, she gives one look and the boys walk off with their ears and tails down, they don't mess with Halli, and for that reason of her being the boss of the "pack", we wouldn't introduce another female dog into the household, it probably wouldn't go down to well.

I do not know what this female to female ratio issue you all keep talking about! Lol! No really, my two females and my sons female dog are BFFs! BUT, I have heard that its more common in females as well.

Because boys know better than to argue with a female.

Actually, I'd never heard of 2 females having a problem before. I've always prefered female dogs, but maybe I'll make my second a boy! In a few years, that is. This is why I love this forum, I learn things I'd never have thought of Smile

Have to disagree, all the breeders/owners we have spoken to say it's the females that display more same sex aggression than males.

I figured I'd add a bit more to my post above. Zoey is no way is aggressive but when my friend brings her 2 year old female Husky to my house Zoey gets VERY vocal(she never barks or howls) and has to be in her face all the time. Sakari, my friends husky is sister to both Ares and Embry and they're all very bonded, especially Ares and Sakari so it might even be jealousy, but I don't think Zoey would do to well if I got a female husky. It's going to be a challenge enough in January when we're watching Sakari for a month. I'm hoping Zoey is okay with it.

I have 3 males living together. Ages 5, 4 and 10 months. the older 2 are neutered. Sure there have been disagreements, and they were on days they didn't get walked and were anxious and balls of energy . I also have a female akita and although i don't foster the alpha dog belief, the husky boys definitely show their respect to her and she rules the roost here.

When we were first looking at sibes I also read that females tend to bump heads more often. But if we get a second it will be another female, my family always preferred females. Anna is very submissive, it might change if we got another dog but I would still get a female.

I was actually told by a breeder out here that she preferred males to females, so maybe its because the aggression is between the females more than the males? Karli is going to be a one dog girl here, that way we can spoil her but its interesting to think about.

Are girls usually the dominant ones? My friend's dad has two huskies, a girl and a boy, and the girl is the dominant one. To the point that she wont let the boy mount her (my friend's dad isn't too concerned about that, if she doesn't have puppies he could care less.) Just curious...

Thanks for all the responses. I never had more than one male at a time and have had 2 females. My elder husky got along great with the male but the other female I had, a rotty/shepard mix who was very dominate, only tolerated the other two. I was worried about getting a male Mal but now know I can get male without worries.

My boyfriend's family has 9 dogs, 5 of them being females (they live in the country). The males are all chill goofballs and get along with everybody and everything. The females (other than 1) are constantly having spats and Marley (the Redbone Coonhound) is ridiculously dominant. She is always in a tiff with one of the others. The male dogs are 2 Border Collies, 1 small mutt (looks like a corgi/dachshund/chi/terrier lol), and a terrier mix (he's old and grumpy but never gets into fights or is snippy.)

I've only had one female dog (Violet) and she is the hardest dog to do anything with as she is a very nervous and reserved dog (she won't hesitate to bite if you do something to her that she does not approve of.) And she does not get along with other dogs, (other than Kale lol), but most of the time she is a grouch.

Violet sounds a lot like Lulu!

Same here, we have 2 female dogs and they spat a lot. Lulu is extraordinarily reactive and protective, and Ghost is very dominant. It gets interesting around here sometimes...

I want to get a male for our next dog, but Aaron is pretty against it for a lot of the reasons that we've dispelled on this thread. I think I might make him read this Razz

Yep, that's Lulu. We have to groom her bit by bit, and it takes both of us to do it. We won't inflict her on professional groomers anymore, so we just deal with her having a crappy cut.

I actually did a research paper on this topic years ago. My findings were that two males were less likely to fight, they will posture over things, but rarely fight. Two females were far more likely to actually fight, and injure one another. I can remember some fur flying fights between my Parents two female cockers lol.
