Hello all, I'm new to the forum, even though I've visited and lurked since a while back. My name is Alex and I have two babies. My 6 year old male, Toby currently has what the vet said is conjunctivitis. This has never happened to him before.

I noticed this first on Wednesday. He was fine in the morning, by the time I got home at around 1 pm I noticed he was squinting on his left eye. Of course I noticed right away... after a few hours I noticed his eye was getting cloudy and could barely keep it open. Where it should be white, it was red. As well as yellowish mucus on the outside.

Took him to the vet first thing the next day and the doc did the fluorescent test and didn't see any scratches or ulcers. I was worried that perhaps the new family member, our husky puppy Maya (2 months) might have scratched him since she's rough, but he didn't find anything. He gave us some eyedrops to apply twice a day, so 2 drops every 8 hours.

However, after coming back to the vet I have been with him most of the day and I noticed he's very lethargic. I've stayed up all night, it's 4:22 am here right now, and he still doesn't want to drink water nor eat. I gave him a treat, well 2 small treats and he did eat those but not as he usually does.

I struggled to get him to go outside to pee, got him to do it twice today. (He's amazingly house broken, he lets me know when he has to go outside). Right after he did he went back upstairs into my bedroom and has been on the floor... I'm so worried. I don't understand how something like this... just happens overnight. Or in a day.

The vet said if it worsens to take him back. But he was optimistic and told me he should be fine.

The good thing is today I only have to go to work for like an hour and come back and I'll be able to watch him all weekend.

To be honest, I've been crying as well.

As of an hour ago that I cleaned the mucus, I noticed on the inside the red is more swollen...

If anyone has had a similar problem with their babies I would appreciate your input, advice, experiences, anything.

If the eye is causing pain that will make him not want to be active and eat. He's probably looking for a quiet dark place to rest. If the eye is more swollen now after you've been using the drops than it was before them it's probably worth going back. It might not be the eye that's the problem but rather something behind the eye or in the tear duct.

So I just got back from the vet, since he was worrying me, and he referred me to an ophthalmologist. They ran the tests, pressure and what not, then she told me that he has primary glaucoma. I'm heartbroken. She says there's no cure, just treatment, gave him 2 new different eyedrops to use, one every 8 hrs and the other every 12 hrs. I can't stop crying. How can something like this just spontaneously happen?

Of course I'm very relieved it's not a life threatening problem, but still, I know there are so many pets with disabilities, you just never think about it happening to one of your babies, you know?

I'm sorry to hear this. Glaucoma and other eye diseases are known hereditary problems in Siberian. One of the reasons that dogs used for breeding be at least 2 years old and have health testing a specifically CERF effort eye diseases and OF A for hips.
