As I mentioned in the welcome forum, we adopted Ginger yesterday (Wednesday). On Tuesday they sent her to the vet to be spayed, only to find, after they opened her up, that she'd already had the surgery some time in the past. When we picked her up from SafeHaven they told us they had her on grain-free kibble, about 1.5 cups/day, so we bought a bag thinking we'd try to keep her to the routine. So far I think she's eaten less than a cup, even after Deborah tried putting some peanut butter in it (she really likes PB flavored treats). She's has had at least a handful of treats each day (lamb lung and peanut butter bites) as Deborah has worked with her so maybe she's getting spoiled. And she's definitely shown interest in what we're having for dinner though she hasn't snagged anything yet and we've refrained from giving her people food.

Between Deborah and I she's had at least 2-3 miles worth of "long" walks and a couple of shorter potty walks. She's got plenty of energy and I don't think she's in any pain, but with the weekend coming I'm curious if this is a normal reaction to surgery & a new home or if I should have Deborah reach out to the Vet who did the surgery?

Hi Chris, You will find that huskies will regulate their food intake, and go off food one day here and there, so not uncommon. She has gone thru a lot in a few days, so it probably is a transitional lack of appetite. By all means call the vet just so they know. For the time being I would use some of her food in lieu of training treats, that way you know she is getting some kibble in there.

Thanks, we'll try the kibble as a treat and see how things go. Deborah called earlier and said she's a lot more energetic today so probably getting settled in. Maybe appetite will pick up. Planning to take her to the park tomorrow and let her run around on a longer leash.

Chris, I had a lab who was spayed twice ( well, you know what I mean ) but they didn't discover that until she was cut open.  You don't say whether they discovered that she had been spayed when they shaved her or when they opened her up.  If it was after they opened her up, she'll still have the reaction of a surgery and healing - it may take her a while to really feel "right."  

If they did open her up, I'd advise against taking her to the park until the sutures have healed well.  Some dogs will sense the "injury" and feeling that they have "prey" pick on her unmercifully (phrasing that somewhat delicately ...)

I have a set of leashes I use on my pack, btw.  The standard 6" leash for when I have to take any of them to town.  A 30" leash for use when I'm walking the property, as well as a 100" (literally a cotton clothesline) leash for when I want to allow them to run.  Just an observation for your consideration - or not.

She's definitely feeling better today. Appetite showed up this afternoon and she played tug of war a bit with Deborah. She also dragged Deborah, who isn't feeling well today, around a bit on their walk. I took her on a 2 mile walk this evening and she stopped tugging after the first mile. I walk faster than Deborah so that probably helped. I'm calling it my Husky gym membership and weightloss plan.

Thanks for the heads up about the other dogs. Were you talking about a dog park? I was thinking just the city park; haven't figured out yet where the dog park is here, if we even have one.

Just bought a 15 foot training leash and a kurgo harness this evening. I've also got a 25 foot horse lunging lead to try out. Probably look at something like your clothes line for the beach.
