Bacchus started blowing his first coat a few weeks ago. It has started mainly around his rear legs. Does blowing the coat happen gradually and do I just focus on the areas that start becoming loose or is should I start brushing the hair all over his body to accelerate the process?

Pin Brush
Comb
Dyson Groomer tool attachment (I have been mainly using this so far as it is very efficient at sucking up the loose fur)

Blowing the coat can happen gradually. Hind and front legs sometimes appear to shed more on some days etc. A great way to accelerate the blowing process is to give your dog a bath. After they dry you will see much more tufts of hair and loose hair for you to brush off. I use a dog rake type brush and a furminator. If you use a furminator and go softly so you don't damage their guard hairs/skin that thing really puts in the work.

Mine start gradually and then one day just explode. Put in as many hours brushing as your dog will allow and this will help move past it faster. When mine hit their explode stage I can remove a compressed 5 gallon bucket of hair a night off of each of them.

With my boy, it happened gradually, then a lot at once, and now it's gradaually ending. I brush him every day, tried blowing the hair (it worked a little lol). But really the only thing I can do is to wait until it over lol

All you can do is brush daily with a good undercoat brush (I use paws pamper), a bath with conditioner will definitely loosen the undercoat and make it easier to slide out. Good Luck!

are your dogs blowing their undercoats or topcoats now?

I got my fella in july, and he was just finishing up blowing his undercoat. was just wondering when he will start shedding his top coat?

The outer coat (top coat, guard hairs. whatever you want to call them) are like any other dog, they shed them on an ongoing basis. Mine shed their undercoat, normally spring and late fall, this year it feels like it's been all year long!

Mine blow coat usually around March/April and again around October/November, but yep, the guard hairs just kinda come and go year round. I've never had them fall out in mass clumps like undercoat except when my boy had an allergic reaction to chicken. You can expect a fairly extreme shedding of all hair though usually within 6 months of getting a dog from the shelter who may have been fed junk food. My two males went nearly bald after I put them on high quality food and they started to detox the horrible alpo hair.

ah, i misunderstood, i thought they blew their undercoat in spring, and "top coat" in winter.

He was blowing when we got him in July, but he was recovering from some bad living conditions (malnourished, living outside for months, no exercise), so that's probably why.

Just wondering when it's going to start up again......

He did NOT like being brushed when we got him in July, but he's a lot more tolerant now, but I should start introducing the brush to him before I need to use it.
