Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

After joining the forum last year, we purchased another husky named Ziva. She is a female husky with blue eyes. We adopted her through a breeder we found on the AKC. We picked her up from the breeder at 12 weeks of age. She was a wonderful puppy and played with her older brother Jethro. After about 3 months after we adopted her she began to have grand mal seizures. My wife and I took her in for treatment where they have prescribed her various steroids as well as a daily dose of phenobarbital and Kepra. These have prevented any seizures in the last 5 months. My wife and I were relieved that our dog was healthy again. At various points through this experience we were worried about having to have to put her down.
Yesterday my wife took both our dogs to the vet for a check-in. The vet did an eye exam on Ziva because one of her eyes is red. We were informed that she has high pressure in one eye and is starting to develop cataracts in the other. We were informed that she will be going blind in both eyes over the course of the next year.
My wife and I have struggled greatly with the cost associated with the seizures we spend 60-70 dollars a month on medications. The emergency visits alone have cost us over 2,000.00 dollars. The vet wants us to take her into an eye specialist, which will also cost a large sum of money for treatment of either eye condition.
At this point, we do not have the financial means to continue trying to keep treating for Ziva. My wife and I are planning on starting to have kids in the near future and we do not believe we can take care of a blind dog with heavy medications. I come here asking for advice on if there are any places that will adopt dogs in various health issues. I am willing to pay for transportation, if necessary to see that she goes somewhere safe.
If you have any suggestions or can provide help, please email me at alexdonald1988@gmail.com

You can try one of the various Siberian Husky rescues in your region. Not knowing where you live, I can't recommend a specific rescue. You could also join the facebook H2M2 (husky huddle and malamute mingle) and post your dilemma there.

Such sad news, I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties and Ziva's health problems.

That's awful. I would probably have wrung the neck of your breeder. Both those are genetic defects that a good breeder who knew what they were doing and what they were breeding would have never put you through. I hope you contacted that breeder and as many people who got puppies from that litter. They will most likely be feeling the same pain that you are.

Here is a site who lists some organizations that help with different things.

https://www.paws.org/cats-and-dogs/other-services/help-with-veterinary-bills/

Also, the Humane Society sometimes knows grants that are out there that can help also. Here is their site. they have a section where you can search by state.

Jenn...very happy you know of some resources. This situation sounds awful. As much as we like to think we will do everything that can be done for our babies, there is the reality of budget constraints. And since most of us are not independently wealthy, that means very hard decisions.
