| Subject: Upset Puppy Stomach? Wed Dec 21, 2016 8:12 pm | |
| I just got my 8 week old puppy on Saturday and noticed that she had very soft stools, to the point of diarrhea, often. She didn't show any signs of illness, no lethargy, vomiting, etc., so I just wrote it off as stress of a new house.
Fast forward to Monday, her stools started to become a little more hard and formed and I was exuberant. At the time I had her on Nutro max large breed puppy kibble and had been feeding her Authority training treats, at the suggestion of a fellow husky owner. Come Tuesday night, I noticed that her stomach seemed a little inflated and she was back to having more diarrhea.
I suspected that we may have been over rewarding her with treats, and that may have been the cause. So, I boiled a full chicken breast, shredded it, and started using that for her reward instead. Today, started well with a couple of semi-solid stools and no stomach inflation. However, as the day progressed her stool reverted back to diarrhea again.
I have her scheduled to go to the veterinarians soon, for an examination and fecal screening. Also, I have been feeding her 1/2 cup of kibble three times (at 9:30am, 2:00pm, and 6:00pm) as recommended by Nutro max.
So what should my next course of action be? Remove the Nutro max, and try an alternative like Candidae or Blue Buffalo? Or stick it out and see if it's caused by some kind of bug? |

| Welcome to the forum! Lot's going on here...........stay away from Blue, had legal issues and they lost, and a recall this year.................A grain free food is what most of us feed, however, the Nutro is not the worst, your pup may have issues with the grains, but, I assume that you switched cold turkey from that your breeder fed? If so, to early to tell, the switch needed to be a slow switch from one to the other. My suggestion is to get the pup into the vet as soon as possible and stay with the Nutro until after you know the pup has no bugs. If no bugs, well, switch to a grain free, Candidae is a good food, others to consider Acana, Fromm, Taste of the Wild. I will mention 2 things...........1) huskies are not a large breed dog, they are medium, and you can feed a regular puppy food or an all life stage food(look for fish oil if going the all life stage food)....and 2) Authority makes a great grain free puppy food it ranks a 4 star, so that is a choice that is good too, others Merrick, Victor, Earthborn. I gave you a list of 4 and 5 star foods. Please remember that moving to a new home, possibly changing food completely different from the breeder and possibly parasites or worms will cause a tummy upset for upwards of 2-4 weeks dependent on what is messing the pups tummy. Until you see a vet I would give 1 tablespoon twice a day of pure can pumpkin (not the pie filling) and 1 tablespoon twice a day of plain greek yogurt or kefir. Those 2 items will help settle the tummy and firm up the poop. Your feeding amounts are fine. |

| I've been meaning to post update for the past few weeks, so here it is.
I was able to visit the vet with Aurora, my 8 week old puppy, right before Christmas. She had a full wellness exam and our vet decided that the loose stool was most likely caused by too quick of a change in food. In addition, she prescribed a probiotic, along with deworming, to use to bolster Aurora's GI/immune system. So we reverted to the Purina Puppy Chow Complete that the breeder was using and began slowly switching (90/10 then to 80/20 every two days and so forth). This coupled with the probiotic seemed to have done the trick as her stool began to firm up, however, after a few days she reverted to loose stool.
I had her vaccinations scheduled a few days ago, so we had another wellness exam done and the vet prescribed a general antibiotic as a precaution, as well as another round of deworming. So far it's been three days on the antibiotic and no real progress has been made; still semi-solid stools during the morning/day and very loose at night. I'm going to let the antibiotics run its full course, seven more days, and hope that her stool starts to firm up. If not, it seems like she'll be changing to a different food (most likely TOTW). More updates to come. |
