Hi guys, I'm planning on getting a husky and since this is my first time owning one, I have some questions to ask
Before I state my questions I would just like to say that I have researched Huskies and understand the patience and commitment that is required for this high energy and demanding dog. I have some experience with big dogs since my previous dogs were Labrador and golden retrievers.
Here are my question:
Can a 1-2 years old husky stay home alone for 5 hours? My previous dogs were ok with being home alone but I'm not sure about husky.
Do you think is should adopt 2 huskies? Through my research, I found out that huskies like to be around people and will do best with a companion. Will having another friend help them adjust better and less bored when I am not home
Do they need to go to "school" for obedience training? I read that husky are very smart but also very stubborn and can be hard to train

Welcome to the forum! As long as an adult husky is well exercised then yes a 1-2 year old can be crated for 5 hours, also the dog has to be crate trained, or you will have to start off at a smaller time frame.

2 huskies, hmmmm, well if you have time to train and care for 2, maybe, probably best to get one and work with him/her for a year and then decide.

If you are skilled at training then obedience classes isn't necessary, however, many dogs benefit from classes for the social aspect.

I would not start with two. Especially not two rescues at first. I would get one, find out what it's like and get your training with that one down and a routine figured out and then if the first dog is doing well with training and your schedule then you can consider getting a second. Two dogs who don't know each other and don't know you can be really difficult to settle down and find balance with. Any husky can have separation anxiety with or without a second dog around. Definitely crate train, try playing a stereo on low (I found that helped my girl with her initial loneliness) and if you have a doggy daycare near you might take the dog to it for a day every now and then to help with socialization and to give it some time off from being alone while you are at work.

I'm still in highschool so I usually walk+dogsit at the end of the week. It's usually last for a few hours only but I was just wondering if my husky would have a problem with this. I know that they're a friendly breed but through my research, I found out that they might have problems with small animals.

Your husky will need to be walked every day a couple miles at least. Mine are doing anywhere from 3-5 miles a day. It is time consuming so this is something you will need to take into consideration with your current school schedule and future schedules if you will be going away for college. As for other dogs, you will need to check this with whatever dog you get. As you are looking to rescue I would look into an organization that fosters their dogs rather than a shelter. Fosters tend to know more about their dogs and their dogs are exposed to a lot more ranging from children and other dogs to potentially cats (though most rescues will not allow a husky to go to a house with cats)

A general rule that I found worked and I worked my schedule around it. Take a puppies age in Months and then add one and that is roughly how long they can hold their bladder. Ex. Puppy is 4 months old, add 1 to make 5, puppy can hold their bladder for roughly 5 hours. I usually don't let my full grown dogs go more than 10 hours without a bathroom break. Even though my GSD can hold his bladder for 24 hours it seems like.
And yes, huskies are stubborn. The way that I train my huskies is that I have to out stubborn them. Once I give a cue, I'm not saying it again. I will wait all day and I will not let them move from that spot until they complete the cue. So make sure you put a bunch of time aside for training and exercising. You can also train while you exercise. Also, make sure that you husky works for their food, no freebies and no begging. It might be cute when they are young, but once they are full grown you're not going to love that big furry guy jumping on you to take your food away. I also recommend having your vets number in your phone, incase you encounter an emergency/you're not sure it's an emergency, it's no charge to call and ask if they need to be brought in or not!
I also agree with the others, I wouldn't recommend getting two, especially if this is your first husky. Reading helps you become aware of things that MIGHT happen with your dog, but every single dog is different so I find that reading can only prepare you so much and then getting the dog and working with them can become a whole new experience and it might not be what you were expecting.
But this forum is super helpful for if that happens. If you are dealing with something with your dog and are not sure how to handle it, there will be at least one person on here that has dealt with it and has overcome it with their dog.
