So, my husky girl just turned 3 in November, and I am concerned she is not eating enough. She's super skinny! Although, the vets do not seem concerned, and said that huskies are usually more skinnier due to their amount of energy/ exercise. However, lately I've been working a lot, and she's crated during the day. I always make sure she has food though, but a lot of times it goes untouched unless one of the cats go near her bowl, or if she actually wants to eat. I read online sometimes huskies don't eat as much if they aren't exercising, but she's just so skinny it worries me. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Like I said the vet isn't too concerned, but with her not exercising like she should, and still being super skinny, I worry.

Also, another thing is I feel like she recently got her summer fur, and it's winter. I don't know if this is where she's in the house so much, or what.

In response to the first question: it's going to be impossible for us to make a good comment without seeing her. Two pictures, if you would please. Take one looking down from above, we're looking to see how much her waist tapers in; the second taken from the same level as she is from the side, we're looking to see how much of a 'tummy tuck" she has.

Now, generalities: it's really difficult with some Huskies to tell whether they're too skinny. As a breed they are svelte. If she has a decent tummy tuck then she's not overweight; if you can feel her ribs but they aren't pronounced then she's not severely underweight. (My most offered comparison is that her ribs should feel the same as if you'd picked up a package of ribs at the store and run your hand across them in the wrapper - you should feel the ribs but not the bones)

Second comment: Most (some / many) huskies will shed twice a year. They'll blow their coats at the beginning of summer and winter - both time you'll see a lot of hair come out. I suspect that what you're seeing is her blowing her summer coat.

While its true the Siberian Husky is a lean athletic breed, it should not be deemed "normal" or "common" for them to be picky eaters. One thing I will suggest it getting her on a feeding schedule as it sounds as though she's more of a free feeder right now. Free feeding, while it may work for some, in general it only goes to produce picky eating habits. Dogs are opportunistic feeders, so while there is competition (in your case the cats) the food is valued other than that it's always available therefore not necessarily a priority. So, offer her her food for 20min then take it away. Do not offer her anything else until the next feeding time. By doing so you will keep her engaged in her food and be able to more closely monitor her intake.

I do agree more information would be nice, a couple photos as described above as well as the current diet she's being offered.
