Bodhi is sick Empty
PostSubject: Bodhi is sick   Bodhi is sick EmptyMon Aug 15, 2016 4:07 pm

Seven days after we returned from a week at the beach, Bodhi started vomiting.
I didn't know about until he vomited up his breakfast, then looked around his kennel where I found several piles of vomit from the night before.

I cut short his morning walk when he vomited 2X more.
After he drank water when he got home, he threw that up.

A friend of my wife's dog was at the same beach as we were and came home two days earlier.
That dog had severe vomiting and diarrhea.
He almost died.

I took Bodhi to my vet who could not find anything wrong- normal temp, not dehydrated, no pain in abdomen.
She gave him an emetic to stop the vomiting.

I brought him home, but he wouldn't stop vomiting.
Called the vet and she told me to take him to the animal ER for an X-ray.

The ER doc put him on an IV and gave him some meds.
They did an ultra sound of his stomach and found no foreign object.
Also the ultra sound showed that his lymph nodes and pancreas were not swollen.
They did a blood test and all his signs were normal.
The ER kept him overnight and his vomiting stopped.
They could not definitively answer what was wrong, not salmon poisoning, not chemical poisoning, perhaps a bug(?)

He's came home yesterday.
I've been feeding him a half cup of white rice and chicken every three hours.
He's on Omeprazole, Cerenia and Metoclopramide.
He hasn't vomited and had a normal poop.
But something is still wrong.
He did a lot of pacing and making strange little noises this morning.
I finally got him to lie down at my feet while I type this.

If anybody has any ideas as to what is going on, I am all ears.
Bodhi is a very healthy dog who has had no GI issues before.

Did they find out what was wrong with the other dog? That sounds rough. Perhaps some kind of algae in the water is all I can think of. Some algaes are really mean when they bloom. i hope he gets to feeling better.

PostSubject: Re: Bodhi is sick   Bodhi is sick EmptyMon Aug 15, 2016 5:40 pm

I agree with Jenn that BGA may be the cause, Leptospirosis was what I thought of....but neither of those seem to fit Bodhi, except vomiting, I am assuming diarrhea, is another symptom he had? I dealt with a severe case of some vomiting, but mainly diarrhea from my two back in January, vets couldn't figure it out, but they were sick for almost a full week. 2 different antibiotics, and a bland diet, and all was better, my puppy did have to get some fluids also, since she was only 6 months old, and she was dehydrated, she had symptoms 2 days before my adult husky had symptoms. We concluded that is was bad water that they drank, but who knows.....I hope Bodhi is finally on the mend, and I will ask too, what did they say was wrong with the other dog, since I assume they went to a different vet?

PostSubject: Re: Bodhi is sick   Bodhi is sick EmptyMon Aug 15, 2016 7:21 pm

Just back from the ER again.
Said his vitals are all good.
Asked about algae.
Vet said if it was BGA, then his liver would be affected, and it's fine.

They think that this is a the end of a GI incident.
His stomach is sore on palpation.
Gave him a tranquilizer and told me to monitor.
As long as he is eating, urinating, pooping, he's going in the right direction.

Right now he's a zombie though.

I hope Bodhi gets better fast Sad I was going to say algae too when I read this earlier at work. I read an article on it just last week, be thankful it's not that. It's awful though when a cause can't be pinpointed Sad

Back at ER.
He threw up 2x this morning- food from lunch yesterday and all the pills I gave him last night.
He was panting, pacing, making little distress sounds.
He's having his stomach x-rayed now.

He doesn't have a blockage, the radiologist says.
It's a motility issue the vet says.
He is not processing food; it's just sitting in his stomach.
So they put an IV in again to hydrate him and get meds on board.
He's going to be in the ICU today and tonight.
Tomorrow he sees an internal medicine specialist.

Nothing's worse than having a dog who's not up to snuff. Sure hope the specialist can come up with something ... I hate not knowing why things aren't right. Best wishes for a good outcome .... soon!

Update for Weds.
Body's tests for addison's and pancreatitis came back normal.
His vitals remain normal.
He threw up once last night, but not today.
They aren't going to scope him.
The ICU doc is putting this down to acute gastritis.
The plan is to monitor tonight and release him to come home mid-day tomorrow if he remains stable.
I am hopeful right now, but still have some angst in my gut.

Thank you all for your support.
I love this community!
