Hi, I'm a new member here. I have a 8 month old male husky, Goku, and recently he's not eating, at least not well. We're in Chennai, India. I know his double coat insulates him from cold and heat. However we do have marble floors and air conditioners, so he's cool. The only pet food available here are - Royal Canin, Pedigree, Drools. I use RC. I got him when he was a month old. There was no problem with his eating then. But in recent past, we need to woo him so much - sprinkling treats in his kibble, even hand feeding him - and yet he doesn't eat on most days. We even changed to feeding him kibble just in the nights, and giving him bread or roti in the morning and since it's summer now we give him curd rice for lunch. It worked in the beginning, but now he's okay with bread and roti, but not rice or fruits or vegetables or eggs or his kibble. He eats bananas, but I don't give home more than one per week. He eats a few pieces of Apple. Carrots and the like hold no interest. He likes biscuits - both his and ours. He loves his treats. Our vet said "dogs eat less in the summer, and he looks healthy and his weight is good." But I'm scared. What do I do to get him his nutrition? I feel like there's no way out and I can't stop worrying. I feel like I'm letting down Goku and ruining his life. I'll do anything for him, please help!

I find that my husky eats less in the summer and huskies do tend to be pickier eaters. Mine has been known to go on hunger strikes for a few meals. Eventually she will eat again when she is ready. Yours may be accustomed to the human food and is holding out because he knows if he doesn't eat his kibble he will get something more delicious.

@Jenah The problem is he doesn't even eat human food •_• I'm not really bothered on what diet he remains - whether kibble or cooked or raw food, as long as he gets his nutrients :-/ any idea what I should do?

Mine too slow up eating in the summer but also when they aren't getting as much exercise. What is your exercise routine like? Does it lessen this time of year for humidity? If he seems in good shape and his weight is holding steady then I wouldn't worry too much. If you want to get him a little extra boost of vitamins and minerals you can see if he will eat a meaty bone once a week from the butcher shop. Some of us can get them very cheap and they can work on them. The bones have marrow and some left over raw meat that is a good source of some extra vitamins and nutrients. There are also pill supplements you can get also. I think one is called Pet Tabs. I see them online. Kinda like a multivitamin for dogs. _________________

@Twisterll We keep him tired all the day, lol. He runs for 3-4 hours each in the morning, afternoon and evening. So for all the running and playing and jumping he does, he hardly eats. And I'm worried the current healthy state of weight and shape will slowly deteriorate or something? :-/ And I'm worried if I give him bones, he's never gonna eat anything but that, you know? And that's kinda bad, right. I will look into supplements, but what about his regular diet? Should I just let him be coz it's summer n all or should I find a way to get him eat if that's even possible?!

you are already kinda spoiling him off his food with the bread and roti if that is all he is eating on a daily basis. If you aren't feeding that and was only doing kibble, how much and how often would he be eating the kibble? Once every three days? Once a week? And how much bread is he getting in the morning? Bread is a filler food full of grains and such that expand once eaten. He could just be filling up on the bread, as we tend to do if bread is offered before a meal and you have to wait long for your main entree. In my eye a good meaty bone is better for him than the bread, so if he has to be spoiled off his kibble by anything you will be getting him better nutrition spoiling him with the bones. _________________

Personally I would switch to the Drools Focus brand kibble. If the Royal is like what we have in the States it is filled with corn, and many huskies do not do well on corn based kibble, and will just avoid eating it. The Drools is a rice and oatmeal based kibble, so yes it has grain, but it looks to be a much better quality kibble than the other 2 that is available. Also as Jenn said it is far better to give a raw meaty bone than any type of breads. A raw chicken thigh is far more nutritious. Hope that helps you.
