Diarrhea off and on. Empty
PostSubject: Diarrhea off and on.   Diarrhea off and on. EmptyThu Jan 14, 2016 1:12 am

My puppy has diarrhea off and on. She'll have normal poop during the day most of the time but at night its diarrhea. I took her to the vet after she ate part of her toy and they gave me a probiotic that helped but now its off and on again. She drinks plenty of water and runs around like a nut. She doesn't act like anything is wrong with her. She won't keep things out her mouth. She's always trying to eat something she shouldn't. I always take it away from her when I see she has it.Is there anything I can do before I take her back to the vet or should I just take her back to get checked again?

Jessica, did they do a stool sample to rule out worms, cocidia or giardia?(I might not be spelling those right), but they tend to be the most common reasons why a puppy has diarrhea. How old is Luna now? Sorry can't remember, but if she is not up to date on her deworming schedule, then yes I would take her back to the vets. The other thing it could be, over feeding or food you are feeding. My Sofie did similar, and i think a lot had to do with her adjusting to the new food I was giving her compared to what her breeder was feeding. In the meantime, and personally I keep a can or two on hand always, feed a tablespoon of pure can pumpkin (not the pie kind), a couple of times a day ( I would stick to twice a day), that will firm it up a bit. Pumpkin is also good to loosen up stuff too, so a handy item to always have. If you don't mind answering my questions, it will help to give you better advice.

She's 3 months old and she just had a stool sample done last week. All together I've had 3 done and they've all came back fine. I do notice it happens when she eats something different then her normal. This really started after she ate parts of her toy. So I'm not sure if that's the problem. She thinks she's a garbage disposal. I'm trying to break the habit of constantly putting things in her mouth.

I agree with Renee. Puppies are prone to worms, Coccidia, etc. but if her tests came out negative, then it must be something she is eating outdoors, like dirt. Puppies LOVE dirt and it will cause diarrhea. As puppies they are vacuums that will inhale anything off the floor, including on their walks outside. Mine is 5 months and still does it so I keep him on a tight leash. Now would be a good time to teach her leave it, or drop it. Always carry treats with you and when she puts something bad in her mouth tell her leave it or in my case sometimes I have to grab it out of his mouth, then give a treat. Pumpkin is great to stop loose stools. Make sure it's plain pumpkin with no sugar.

Thanks. Normally I'm on top of everything she puts in her mouth but I'm currently sick myself and it's hard for me to keep up with her at the moment. I did go a head and make an appointment with her vet because over night the diarrhea did get worse. So I want to male sure that there's not a blockage from that toy she ate.

Jessica, I know it stinks having to go to the vet a lot, but better safe than sorry. It does get frustrating, and Sofie at almost 23 weeks old can at times eat dirt, ugh, that is when she has diarrhea. I think you were feeding a grain free, if so good, that is not the problem then. Also, be watchful of how much you feed, even with the best foods that are grain free I know myself and Sarah, poster above, feed about 2 cups of food a day. If you only feed twice a day, breaking it up to 3 or 4 times, until Luna is over 4 months may firm it up too. A lot of it is minor adjustments on your part, they do have very small digestive tracts. It could also be treats you're giving, so a lot of thing can make a healthy pup have diarrhea, specifically at night. Sarah, is right on with teaching leave and drop it, must teach both. When yanking a bad item out of her mouth say drop it, when she does praise her, if she tries to go back to it, say leave it, rush her along so she does leave it and praise.

That's what we are doing ( the leave it and drop it). I freak out about everything medical. I'm worried that there's a part of toy stuck in there, making her sick. She was acting fine before all that happened. The only time she would get diarrhea, would be from different foods or treats but after I found stuffing from her toy in her poop, that's when the diarrhea started bad. Other then the diarrhea, she acts fine. She runs around playing like crazy, except today. She's been laying around like she doesn't feel good. I know tummy problems are horrible and I don't want to see her suffer. I tried what the vet said to try before I made her appointment but it didn't work, so she's got an appointment for later today. I will keep posted on what's going on.

They gave her dewormer, antibiotics and probiotics to try before doing expensive test. The nurse tech was talking about parvo but Luna has had that shot and all her shots on time and she doesn't act sick like a dog with it would. I've had a dog with it before and she doesn't act like the one that did. But now that the lady said something, im gonna be even more paranoid then I already am.

When it comes to Giardia and Coccidia in their early stages they can be missed by tests BUT as I have come to experience with both a cat and a dog, I don't think I could ever miss either of those parasites with a simple nose test. Diarrhea that is plagued by Giardia or Coccidia have a reek about them that will make your eyes water and your stomach turn. After having one of my dogs go through it when our new kitten showed up with it (not so new now) it didn't take a vet trip to know what was going on with her. The vet only confirmed what my nose had already told me and gave me meds. Just something to note and have on file if you ever do run into those organisms.

I would check all of her toys for any little parts that might be missing and give them all a thorough washing. It could be that new toys still have a little manufacturer's residue on them that doesn't agree with her. If she has a blockage eventually she will just stop pooping, not continue to spew. Dirt eaters though always get some interesting minerals in their diet their stomachs might wish they would lay off though. Potting soil can especially make things interesting.

Jessica, I feel for you, have been going through a particularly difficult bout with my girl last 24 hours. No obvious sign of any parasite, worm, disease, so have to imagine food related. I did fast her for 15 hours, and then cooked up turkey burger in a ton of water (stave off dehydration) and mixed with pumpkin. has held that down for 2 hours, and hasn't tried to poop for 4 hours, which it has been every 2 hours for the last 24 hours. Half the battle I guess is knowing the bad diarrhea from the good, if there is such a thing, haha. Hang in there.

She had a solid poop this afternoon then she decided to go in the bathroom and get cat poop out the box when I had my back turned and now she's got diarrhea again. I hope that its nothing serious, if it doesn't stop. The vet tech told me to except problems with her for the rest of her life. I don't understand why she would say that when the actual vet doesn't even know what's going on. Any thoughts on that?

I would ignore the vet tech. I may be inclined to ask the vet what she meant by that. hmmm, that is interesting. Did she know that Luna ate cat poop? And imply that Luna will always do that? Jessica, puppies do stupid stuff it's how they experience things. My older dog, ate deer poop until she was a year old, and then one day it didn't taste good, lol. I know it is stressful, I think I got 2 hours of sleep total last night. They don't stay puppies forever. Once she is full grown and not eating everything, you will miss not having a puppy. Tummy troubles are so tough to deal with, because you hate them being ill and don't know what made them sick. I might be inclined to feed a bland diet, I've always recommended chicken and rice, but my new go to, and what also helps with dehydration is cooking a couple of (2-3)ounces of turkey burger in about a cup and a half of water, mix all of that(broth too, to help in not being dehydrated) with 2 tablespoons of pure can pumpkin. This gave Sofie a huge break on potty every 2 hours down to 5 hours, and it firm up each time. I only fed twice today after fasting, but gave a ton of water, for 12-15 hours, yes she was starving, then fed her that, 7 hours later fed it again. With yours a little younger than mine, maybe 3 times a day after a 10-12 hour fast. I would feed that diet for a couple of days, after the first day of just that, add in 1-2 tablespoons of plain greek yogurt. See if her tummy settles with that.

So far shes doing good again. Knock on wood. Lol. I have another question. Is it normal for their bottom gums to be greyish/purple? Her gums are nice and pink like they should be but in the back by the jawline is a greyish /purple. Is that bad? The vet hasn't said anything and I think they've always been that way. I'm not sure though. I just noticed.

How much food are you giving daily? Mine had this problem as a puppy. I was feeding Orijens, a very high protein brand, and was giving under the recommended amount. She would have firm in the morning and by night it would be soft to runny. I decreased the amount even more and haven't had a problem since. I feed TWO total cups a day, one in morning and one evening. Hope you are able to find a solution.

Sorry about what you're going through. One thing I would add is that if making sure she doesn't eat anything inappropriate doesn't work you might want to chat with your vet and see if there might be a food intolerance. Food intolerance normally shows up as gastrointestinal issues and they can have intolerance to certain types of meat. I was trying to think why the vet tech would say what she did and that's really all I can come up with since it would be something you'd have to manage long term.

I could be wrong but this sounds a lot like food intolerance as Danielle mentioned since Red went through the same thing the first couple months we had her. She didn't have any diarreah after we switched her to TOTW puppy food. Also check to see if any food or treats that you give have dairy in them. Luna could possibly have lactose intolerance. I gave Red a Himalayan dog chew a few times and it has yak milk. She would have diarrhea later that night each time. As for the coloring of the gums, I would definitely bring it up to the vet. Even if they haven't shown any concern over it, it'll settle your nerves just to get an answer from them on it. Good luck with all of this!

Thanks. She's been having normal poop, unless she's given something out of the ordinary like treats when we go to the pet store. I'm gonna start telling them not to give her any. This morning she had kinda solid but soft poop. She's still on a probiotic which seems to be helping.
