So we finally got Finley weighed last week (for the first time in three months) and she now weighs 47 pounds at 8.5 months old. Her mum is only 50 pounds and I'm wondering if we maybe feed her too much. When I do the test to see if I can feel her ribs/spine, I can feel her spine but her ribs definitely have a covering over them, I can't feel any rib definition, however she does have a waist tuck and defined shape! My husband thinks she looks great and doesn't want her to be any slimmer, but he is a big fan of 'husky' looking huskies, he points out ones that I know are overweight as how she should look... We feed her Now Fresh puppy, we used to feed slightly under the bag recommendation at three cups a day but after reading all the posts on here I have managed to persuade the other half to cut it to 2.5 cups, I'm wondering if I should cut it more? She eats all her food most of the time, and gets about an hour of walks a day during our 4 day work week, plus playtime indoors, then about two hours or so of walks a day at the weekend. I'll try and attach some pictures shortly.

| What does your vet say? Female huskies normally weight between 35-50lbs (50 lbs on the largest size). She should have an hourglass figure when you look at her from above. Sounds to me like she gets plenty of exercise. She might level off in a few months times, she is still a puppy.

Sounds like her mother was at the max for the breed. Looks like your pup will exceed that. They aren't a large breed at all. I'd say at this age you actually want her on the skinny side until a year old. Don't judge her on other Sibes. Just make sure she is keeping steady on her weight and expect some comments on "OMG so skinny!" Read "omg I've never seen a dog with a proper weight".

I agree with JM, you want a dog on the lean side, never "husky" looking. Overall it is best to have a lean dog, the heavier they are the more pressure is put in growing bones and joints. 2.5 cups of a good quality food is more than enough, she still is a puppy. At about a year I would cut it down to 2 cups, and possibly more if she continues to add on weight. Something to consider, some huskies get their last real burst of growing at 8 months, so she may indeed have a major growth spurt, and she may be pretty much done growing, and just be filling out. There are other factors, like is the sire over breed standard? Are they a fast growing line? A great example of nice looking dog is Jm's last pic in the signature, excellent sized dog, yet some people may think that dog is skinny. Personally that dog is the epitome of the perfect husky.

Thanks for all the info, JM you have beautiful dogs Her vet is a fan of huskier huskies too, most of the huskies in town are mixed with malamute or other breeds so people think Finley is actually too small when they see her, even though she is nearing the top of breed standard! It is pretty rare to get a purebred sib here. As for her dad, he is top of breed standard too, at 60 pounds, I didn't think to ask about how fast they mature, I'll ask Joanna next time she is online. I'm definitely a fan of a lean dog though, so It'll keep up with the exercise and monitor the waistline and see how we go. It will be easier in summer when we can start to get her in to a bit of cross country biking (slowly) and more hikes open up. I finally got some pictures to show how she looks but can't post pics yet lol
