| Hi all,
Im new to these kinda forums, since this is the first husky i have and encountered the issue.
Whenever i go out walk with her like x2 times a day, and i let her loose aswell on a closed area, where she runs around alot. The issue i'm having with my 4 year old seberian husky, whenever he gets lose of the harness around him, it has happend a few times, like 2 times. She runs away, and there is no way in getting her back,(outside the closed area ) until she is away for a good 1h30m of hunting rabbits, and just generally running around, there are alot of these animals where i live. So whenever he sees one he puls really hard to follow it... now whatever i do, pull him back,or call commands to stay close, its just not helping in any way. I never hurt the husky if he does not listen to me, since i think thats no the solution. Even when its all tightend up, Though i think i'll need to get a new one for her, since its probably not a good one.
Me and my mom honestly feel the husky did not get raised properly with his previous owner(s). He is although chipped and comes from Siberia on the passport.
The husky itself is no problem when at home, and does nothing wrong.
What should i do? Get him to teacher school? Its like whatever we are saying, its not working properly, we moved recently aswell.. from a big garden to a very small one, so i always walk each day 2x times and let her loose aswell.
Any ideas?
Thanks |

| From reading your post i am confused, do you have just one husky and is it a she or a he?
Where do you live? It seems like you may not be in the usa. This info helps in us suggesting products.
I would suggest a better harness, one that can not be backed out of. You need to keep the husky secured while out walking it outside an inclosed area.
Working on recall with a very long leash will help. Also moving might have the husky stressed out.
How long have you had it? _________________ |

How long have you had it? From reading your post i am confused, do you have just one husky and is it a she or a he?Yeah, i have only one husky and its a she, sorr for my poor explanation. Where do you live?I live in europe,Belgium. How long have you had it?For about 3 years now,she was almost a year when i had her. And yeah, whenever i'm walking with her outside the inclosed-area, its just her commanding really, its not like walking is not working, its just that she's not listening when walking outside, esp if she have seen an animal in the park(cats, rabbits) most of the time, when she sees another dog, thats not the case however. Last night she ran away for a second time. has happend before a year ago. And then automatically comes back after a good 1h 2h, I honestly cannot catch her or she wont listen. Luckly she is running into the park most of the time. Its just that, whenever it happends again she would listen to my command, but i feel thats not gonna happen any time soon.. And i'll try to get a better harness next week! Also, while im here, What are good products/food for huskys? Thanks. |

| @crouchgod - for people outside the US, it really helps us all if they will fill in a bit more of their profile. I think we assume that most folks here are in the US with a smattering of Canadians and a few, like yourself who are outside the 'norm'. Huskies are bred to run - really, that is why they were raised, to pull the sleds of the Chuckchi's in Siberia - so every chance they get, they will run. Neither you nor the original owner are doing anything wrong - that's just the nature of the breed. What that means for most of us - there are a few exceptions - is that our dogs are never let off lead unless they're in an enclosed space. I think most of us would like to be able to let our dogs go play and run to their hearts content but it seems that when we do we end up with a heartache ( I did, I thought I had an exception until she didn't come home ). One of our members who uses a harness, as I think you do, clips the harness to the collar so that if her dog slips the harness, she still has control with the collar. The other comment you make that I'll speak to is that she 'doesn't listen' ... I think I'd try to explain it like this ... since a sibe is in front of the sled, they have to decide if a certain path is safe or not or if this is the best path to get to where they're 'normally' going (thinking in terms of a Sibe team going home?) People who run Sibes generally accept that they're headstrong and often for a reason that the 'driver' may not be able to see (( I'll get corrected on this if I'm too wrong, won't I )) People who work teams, I think, have accepted that they're guiding a willing co-worker (the dogs) rather than like driving a car where you're in total control (we hope!) There is nothing wrong with a dog who doesn't listen, that's just the way they are. It takes a lot of constant hard work to have a Sibe who does what you want, when you want it - that's just not the type of dog they are. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| As Al explained.. this is how sibes were bred. Their breed traits are what make them /different/ from other breeds of dogs. I'd highly suggest reading up on positive force free training, investing in some high-value treats, and doing recall on a long lead. Don't command-poison and repeat come over and over, just say it once, and give a gentle tug on the lead. Also try squeaky toys, odd noises, etc. Once she comes, exclaim 'good girl!' and give her a big treat. Then walk around, let her get distracted, and repeat. That's how I would personally just start, so you can get her attention a little more. But unfortunately, in emergencies, my dogs still don't listen to recall. In the yard or at a park I can get them to come on the drop of a dime, but the time one of mine got loose at a mushing race he knew he was free and he was gone. We were lucky he came back.. but thats exactly why you should not intentionally let them off and just practice recall as often as you can. |
