Hi There,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Long story short, for years my partner and I have wanted a husky but because of housing arrangements/travel plans we have never acted upon it.

Finally, we have just built our first house and are in a great position to own a puppy. We were in contact early in the year and finally, the puppy is due to be born this week and will be ours within 11-12 weeks! Exciting, of course!

Anyway, we will be entering puppy school and after mountains of resources are confident in training the pup.

One thing I am not sure to go about however - is that I like to go for jogs ( I live in Aus and I am a few mins from the beach) and would love to be able to take our husky on my jogs with me. Its a pretty isolated beach, so distractions shouldn't be a big problem.

Is there any other joggers out there, who have managed to train their husky to run along side them? Not that it will matter to my husky as I know she will be able to out run me, distance will range from 3-12kms mostly, nothing crazy quick..

I also want to be able to separate my jogs with her running with me to walks as well ( I wont be running all year round/my fiance and I will still take her for walks) - is there a good way to seperate the two?

In an ideal world, I would whip off the leash and off we go - however I know that more than likely, off the leash will not be an option, so I am after what could be the next best thing.

Many thanks for the tonnes of information on offer on this site! Very Happy

Edit: Oh and it may be worth mentioning that Iw ill be jogging before 7am or after 7pm if the weatehr is warm to make sure its as cool as possible ( It is when I like to run anyway).

Double edit: I also plan to wait a while before even attempting to run with her, knowing she can't do much exercise as a young puppy. Just want to get ideas for anything to start young with her which will help Smile.

Regarding the running part of your question, Huskies are generally pretty good about running, as in not really pulling but running alongside. My boy will run alongside from the start and actually runs by my side, whereas my girl (the puller when on walks)as well as any other husky I've ever had will do that immediate "take off at full speed" and all I've ever had to do was gently pull back once and they got the message and just ran at my pace, albeit slightly ahead of me (but not pulling) . Others may have different experiences and will chime in here, but for me this is the way it's been and I personally don't think you will have any issues in this regard.

And welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your first husky Smile

If you nail down leash training and teaching her to walk in the heel position at your side, you shouldn't have any issue with her running at your side. If you let her walk on leash in front of you it could make her want to run in front of you later on. My girl came to me with the need to walk in front of me which makes her want to run in front of me also and she ends up getting kicked in the butt because she doesn't keep pace. Teaching the heel position for all things has remedied this.

#1. No running until she/he is a year old. its too hard on their developing joints and muscles.
#2. I run with mine using a running belt like this:
http://www.alpineoutfitters.net/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=255
she gets a harness and runs ahead of me, by KM 2-3 shes running beside me, by km 5 I'm pulling her a little. We dont run super often though.

For us we use a leash and collar to walk, and a harness to run. She knows the difference and knows to pull only if she has her harness on. It took a lot of training. Use that first year to your advantage and teach her to heel well, then work on training her to run when she is at least 1.

Thanks guys for the replies Smile.

Yep - wasn't planning on doing this until next summer ( November 2016) but just wanted to make sure I get the foundation right with training etc while she is young.

Sounds like just need to place importance on heeling/walking by my side and I should be fine from there.

Cheers guys Smile
