| We're having troubles housetraining Luna, our 11-week-old sibe. We could not take her outside because her vaccinations are still incomplete so we've been trying to get her to work with a potty (the fake grass type). The problem is that she has had a number of accidents around the house and I think she may have developed a bad habit. We clean up as best we could with an enzymatic cleaner, but... Let's just say we're still cleaning.
We've tried interrupting her when she starts to go and then transferring her to the potty. We've tried leaving residues of her pee on the potty and using potty sprays. We've tried crate training too and we know her rhythm (e.g. when she wakes up, she has to go). Still, she just refuses to go when we take her to her potty. I don't know if she doesn't like the surface because she has a tendency to lie down on the fake grass (loves it) or try and "dig" into it. When she's raring to go, she whimpers a little then sits down to hold her pee in. I've tried holding her there for up to 30 minutes waiting for her to give up and just pee there. I've tried leashing her by her potty while I stare at her, treats ready. Nada. Nothing. Nil. She just sits there. Once she's free (say, for playtime), she finds some unpredictable spot and pees there.
Is there a way to "reset" the training with a puppy who has developed bad habits? Should I try crating her and taking her out every hour only to potty, never giving her playtime until she figures it out? Any tips? |

| has she had any shots yet? is it possible to just carry her outside to one spot, maybe where there aren't any dogs around? then keep her tethered to you inside or in a crate. |

| You can take her outside. you need to take her outside, she needs the air and real grass. Just keep her away from other dogs or dog heavy areas as well as puddles. reward her when she pees on the grass outside. Keep cleaning inside accidents with enzymatic cleaners, and if you can interrupt do so and bring her out right away. Crating her when you cant be around is the best option, or like Amy said, tether her to you so you can keep an eye on her.

| As long as you allow her to lie down on the fake grass, she is not going to pee there. I agree with Kelly and Amy, you need to take her outside to pee. The artificial grass is similar to putting pee pads or newspapers down, once you start that it will be difficult to break her from peeing in the house. |

| She has only had her first set of shots. When we got her from her previous owner, our vet recommended letting the first shots lapse and just restarting the vaccinations. Unfortunately, our house is surrounded by dog-owning neighbours who don't take very good care of their pets. There are nice, grassy places I plan to take her when she's ready for walks, but they're 5-10 minutes away. I do agree that she would benefit so much from getting out and getting air though. I will figure out possible arrangements. Carrying her (while I still can hahaha) to a good spot sounds promising! |
