| Subject: Jack eats poop... Sun Oct 04, 2015 5:22 pm | |
| Hey guys! It's been a while since I've posted. Jack is now a little over 9 months old! And he has giardia again I think he's had it for a couple of months, but I found out that he was positive for it around the beginning of September and three rounds of medication later... He still has it :/ The reason I'm posting this in training and not medical issues is because the ladies at Jack's daycare say he eats poop. I'm 98% certain that daycare is where he got the giardia from since he is there from 7 AM to 5 PM five days a week. Why they let him eat poop is beyond me since someone is always there with the dogs. I'm looking for someone else to watch him once he gets cleared. Anyways. Does anyone have any training tips to get him to stop eating poop? I don't have to deal with it much at home though since I live in an apartment and pick up his stool right away. I've been thinking of feeding him more? If he's hungry enough to be eating poop, then maybe he should be eating more. Any tips will help! Thanks. |

| Excellent article can be found on ASPCA about coprophagia with some suggestions on prevention.
But lots of luck, it seems that some dogs just don't get the idea though seems to help with some dogs. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Ami and Archer were both poop eaters when younger. Other than the startled "gross" and yanking their leashes away and (even more gross) yanking it out of there mouths, we didn't really train them not to...they just somehow...stopped. BUt it was awful for awhile - I wouldn't even let Ami kiss me |

| Sierra is a poop eater, i can't stop her, i have added food, added supplements, only thing that works is me seeing it before her and like amy said, pulling her away from it or out of her mouth. its not all poop, she will not eat hers or jacks, but something tells me its a brand of dog food poop that she likes. going to the dog park is hell!
as for Jack, if the day care was better about picking up the dog poop he would not be eating it, i would talk to them about the cleanness of the area!
good luck on trying to fix the issue, i gave up _________________ |

| Gabby is also a poop eater. We have tried just about everything as well. Good thing is, she has no interest in her our poop, only others, the nastier/smellier is what she really goes after.
At one point, She was going to a day care that was letting her eat poop right out of the bin the workers put it in. They knew she was doing it but just let it happen. On days she went to day care, she was coming home bloated and had diarrhea the whole next day. Once we figured out why, we gave them a chance to stop it, but they did not so we took her elsewhere. |

| Looks like there's not really a way to make him stop :/ Jack's head is always down when we walk, so I keep a close eye on him and I say "leave it" before he even has the chance to grab it so he knows what I'm talking about. I'm on him like a hawk, but I can't train him out of it if daycare doesn't do anything about it! I guess I will have to talk to them or take him somewhere else that will look after him even better.
Thanks everyone who replied! |

| I would try an exercise similar to distraction proofing.
Find an open area to do this exercise, preferably with minimal distractions. Get some very smelly poop that you know he would immediately go for and place it somewhere in this area. Stand roughly 15-20 feet away with your dog on leash at your side (want to be using a slip leash). Begin walking towards the poop. If he is charging ahead immediately, about face turn and walk the opposite direction. As soon as he isn't charging ahead, walk towards the poop with some of the leash gathered in your hand. Right before he gets close enough to smell/eat it, drop the extra slack of the leash gathered in your hand first and about face turn, walking in the opposite direction.
Make sure he never gets close enough to actually touch it. It should give him a nice, firm tug. Continue walking through the resistance in the opposite direction. Repeat this exercise a million times lol. If he is able to approach or walk by the poop without going for it, you are seeing results. You want to him see him "check in" with you by turning his head around, looking back at you. This isn't the exact procedure of the actual training exercise, but you might see results with it. |
