How to teach her to pull a bike? Empty
PostSubject: How to teach her to pull a bike?   How to teach her to pull a bike? EmptyThu Sep 24, 2015 7:14 am

So due to some nasty shin splints, I've had to give up running with my best girl for a while. We started bicycling instead and now I wanna turn bicycling into bike-joring. Gonna invest in a proper bikejorer starter kit and a new mountain bike.

Here's my problem: Unless my girl catches the smell of sheep in the hills, she couldn't even pull a car tire to save her life! When she's on a regular walk with mommy, we obviously don't want her to pull, so we've been training her specifically to not do that. When we got her she hadn't been on a leash for six years and she had never pulled anything. Now we've trained her by "planting" ourselves every time she pulled on a walk and after months of consistency, it finally paid off. She doesn't pull. And ironically that is now a "problem" when trying to bike...jor...?

How do I teach her to pull the bike instead of just running next to it? Anyone with experience?

All the best

i have read that you can have someone bike up in front of you and see if she will try to catch the person riding in front of you. i haven't tried it myself but cant wait to try.

That is how I'm going to try with Ami - have Wayne ride a bike in front of us. Ami hates being 2nd, always wants to be lead dog. We'll see.

Youtube is a pretty good resource for finding videos on how to teach your dog...well lots of things. When we started we started on a football field wearing a harness...and my middle son ran across the field yelling hike...while our first husky figured out that it meant run....went ahead and popped down a video that breaks it down into steps...it is on a sled rather than a bike.

Make sure your keeping an eye on temperatures, and your either wearing booties if your going on pavement or your sticking to softer surfaces that aren't so hard on the joints.
