| SILENT RECALL! A I've posted these over the years, there are some companies that seem to re-appear all too often and some who never seem to have a recall ever. I'm posting the contents of an email I received earlier today just for information purposes ... but as Dave says, it's outrageous that companies would issue a recall and then notify only a small, select group. - Dave at Petful wrote:
- Hey!
It's Dave again from Petful.
Today I want to share something I think is very important ...
... an outrageous example of the occasional “silent recalls” that are leaving people in the dark about pet food safety.
Over a period of 14 months, a pet food company quietly withdrew more than 23 tons(!) of dog and cat food from circulation — and it all happened without even a whisper of media coverage.
“Silent recalls” like this are becoming more and more common as pet food companies try to avoid the negative publicity surrounding recalls.
In early December 2017, I learned that a company called Darwin’s Natural Pet Products was recalling some of its Natural Selections pet food because of the potential for salmonella and listeria contamination. A company spokesman told me that “only about 2,000 customers” were affected.
Yet that recall was only PART of the story.
The full story? 23 tons.
It turns out that the manufacturer had quietly issued a number of other recalls going back more than 1 year before that, involving more than 23 tons of dog and cat food in total.
“Customers who purchased the recalled products were notified [by the company] of the recalls by email — 2 to 3 months after the production dates of each batch,” according to a report from Food Safety News.
The report added, “No recall notices were posted for the general public on the company’s website or the Food and Drug Administration’s website.”
Silent recalls are a sleazy trick.
Consumer safety advocates have been sounding the alarm bells about the increasing number of silent recalls over the past decade.
What makes a recall silent? When the product is withdrawn without public notice. Usually that means only distributors or select stores are notified. The media often doesn’t hear anything about it. And the manufacturer avoids public embarrassment and potential lawsuits.
But the general public has every right to know when a product has been pulled from the market because of concerns about that product’s safety.
Silent recalls make a company look sneaky and dishonest.
The bottom line: We just want HONESTY.
To the pet food companies, I say this:
If there’s a problem with your product, tell us. Then fix the problem, in a transparent way.
Now, here's why you're in good hands with Petful ...
If you were subscribed only to the FDA’s recall alerts, you might never have found out that 23 tons of Darwin’s pet food was recalled in total.
Why? Because as I write this, these recalls are not listed anywhere on the FDA’s website.
Outrageous!
For years now, I and my team at Petful have been keeping a watchful eye out for pet safety issues, and we send out timely recall alerts that are saving pets’ lives.
So here's what I want to say to you today ...
On behalf of pets everywhere, THANK YOU. Thank you for being part of Petful's email list. Together we're giving pets happier, healthier lives.
Dave
If you missed the link to Petful in the quote here it is again. An even more interesting list is from Food Safety News which lists all of the recalled (but not recalled) lots. To keep this information section up to date, I get notices from Petful, DogFoodAdvisor and the FDA. This is the first I've heard of anything other than the December recall. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |
