| We have a 1 year old infant at home and recently we were offered to adopt a 2 year old Siberian Husky. This will be our first dog. We have heard that she is potty trained but may need obedience training.
My question to All experienced Siberian husky owners is that with 1 year at home, would you recommend to own this breed? We have heard that dog may have digging issues as well. How well will they go with babies? Can they hurt babies? Should we wait to own a husky?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

| Hey, welcome to our forum. Since I'm well past the family years, I can only respond with what I've read and that has to be a big "Maybe".
Huskies seem to be notorious for being rambunctious ... if your one year old is equally rambunctious and doesn't bellow every time he lands on his seat then they could be a great fit.
I've seen pictures of little children crawling all over "their" husky with the Husky seeming to love it. Of the three Huskies I have, one loves to rough house with any kid that comes near - but gently enough that they're not hurt. One will tolerate being loved on (little girl grabbed her around the neck and I almost shat my britches) and she just leaned into the little girl with "more!"
Remember that in their ancient homeland, they were used to living en familia, they were the heaters and baby sitters for the kids - and that seems to hold through to today's descendants. There is always the danger that any dog may behave wrongly or the child may unintentionally provoke the pup - poking it in the eye for example and invoke an improper response (a growl or nip might be expected, a bite probably not)
I would not, however, even consider bringing the pup home without a meet and greet session, first with you adults and then with the child. The child may scare the poor dog witless or vice versa or you may find a human / canine match made in heaven.
ETA: Considering the age of your youngster, I would not, personally, allow them to mingle without adult supervision - maybe after they come to know each other; at two the pup is adult enough to know how to behave with a child but as the expression goes, "stuff happens" _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I would have to second Al with the maybe, it will depend on the husky but at 2yrs old they husky will be very wired and will need time (walks, training and more mental games) do you have time to work with the husky as well as tend to your 1yr old? the fact the dog is digging and needs work it tells me the house they are in not is not tiring the husky out or working with it. a meet and greet is a must, away form both homes and then at your home. has the dog been around kids?
i do not have kids but i work in rescue and most of our huskies come in at 2 because they become crazy and or the family is having a baby and no time for the dog. if you do take this pup in please make it for the long haul, it will be challenging but if you put the work in for the dogs needs they make wonderful family dogs. _________________ |

| I think now might not be the best time...only because a 2 year old husky is a bouncy, zoomie whirlwind. Especially if in need of training and under exercised. I have young grandchildren and adopted a 1 yr old male husky. I could not lot puppy anywhere near the grandkids unless I had him on short leash - not because he was aggressive but because he was exuberant and untrained. He terrified my 4 yr old grandson one afternoon when we were sitting outside in the adirondack chairs - and Ami in his excitement had the zoomies. With grandson in the center of the tornado...even though Ami was kissing him on every bound up into the chair, it was a whirlwind of big, fluffy dog ominously closed to the now screaming child. And that was with me within 3 ft - I had to cover child with my body all the while hollering at him to sit. Right. In the middle of zoomies, ain't gonna happen. A couple of incidents with another grandson who longs deeply for his own dog. This one was 7, went out to see the dog after I had said "wait for me" and went out anyway - Ami, again in excited joy, bounced up and knocked him over. Another time, on a camping trip, grandson went to see the dog and got in the path of Ami's tether, again knocked down, some bruises. Even last month, with grandson now 8, while we were visiting, Ami went into the den where the kids were watching tv - raked grandson's face with a paw in while kissing him. Ami loves kids - infants and toddlers and everyone else, too. I have to be incredibly careful with my new granddaughter - he wants desperately to kiss her - but that usually means a paw comes up, too and I am afraid of her getting a nail in the eye or a rake of the paw. Please note - all of this is because he loves the kids, gets so excited when they are here. Maybe if we lived with kids it would be different. But all Ami has is two sedate old farts. All that being said - last year when we were babysitting the 1 yr old, who was not having a good day, the toddler would cry, Ami would come running, lick his face, toddler would stop crying and laugh. All was right with the world. Repeated throughout the day. This year however, toddler is now 2.5 and runs around holding on to Ami's tail saying "BIIIG Tail" After a while, big tail pleads to go out in the garage Here is son's husky mix with the new granddaughter - son's dog is markedly less boisterous than Ami: |

| Oh - that picture? The second one after this, granddaughter is pulling his ear and he, too, decided a change in venue was in order. |

| We don't have kids yet, but I think it goes without saying that if you do get a dog, any dog, you'll want to always surpervise. The story I always tell people:
Luka LOVES kids. He wants to give them face kisses and snuggles the whole 9. But he's very excitable and distracted and 0-60 in a few milliseconds. Enter 6 year old neighbor. All she wants to do is play with the puppies. So he sits to greet her, starts getting head pats and gives her kisses. Her mom and I start talking and are distracted for less than a minute. In that time she reached into her bag, got out a beanie babie, and just like that it's down his gullet. Little girl tries to reach in and get it from him inside his mouth but luckily I'm there to yank him away. He started choking so I had to wedge his mouth open and stick my fingers in his throat and reach in and pull it out.
Sounds dramatic but it's over in 30 seconds. Everyone's ok and little girl got her (soggy) beanie babie back, but my point is: constant vigilance. And huskies are,as my breeder put it, crack heads. It's for both the kids and the dogs safety.
Of course I don't want to scare you: our first was a 2 year old when we got her and was super laid back, so it'll depend on the dog. Mia lets toddlers hang off her without issues.
Tl;dr: ditto what everyone else said-supervision and a meet and greet! |
