Question about an injured paw on a small puppy... Empty
PostSubject: Question about an injured paw on a small puppy...   Question about an injured paw on a small puppy... EmptyThu Feb 19, 2015 12:46 pm

The new puppy we're getting had a slight incident when she was only a couple weeks old. One of her litter mates was playing with her and somehow dug it's nail into one of her toes. It swelled up pretty bad and got infected and when the breeder took her to the vet the vet said the best option to avoid future issues was to remove the toe. So, our little girl has a toe missing on her left paw. It was already healed up most of the way before we chose her, and the IV site where they had to shave a tiny bit of fur on the opposite paw was already partially furry again. My question is, has anyone had anything like this happen before? Do you know if it will cause any future problems for her that we should be on the look out for? You can't even see the IV site anymore, and you can barely see the scar where the one toe was. She seems to walk and run perfectly normal and can keep up with her litter mates with no issues. She's such a sweetie pie, I just want to be sure that we don't have to watch for anything from it. Thanks!

Since it happened when she was so little, it is unlikely to affect her as she will have already learned to do everything without the toe.

The only extreme long term ramification I can think of would be joint problems or similar down the road if she develops an unnatural gait that puts unusual stress on her body. I think that would depend on which toe it is and is probably unlikely.
