| Does anyone have any games or ideas for playtime they would like to share?
Our husky gets walked frequently, plays at the dog park, and has lots of toys but still gets bored. She loves chase and will play "soccer" but often will only play a game for 2-3 minutes before she is over it.
She has completed advanced training and we hoped to do agility but no one teaches it in our area. Any ideas? Trying to keep her engaged! |

| Get down on all 4s and play with her like you are a dog, or better yet, a Husky.
Wrestle. Head butt. Let her mouth you freely--use it to practice "Off" on command. First hide, and let her find you and then play like this as her reward.
She will A) fall madly in love with you, and B) be engaged and worn out after only a short time.
Make sure you do this on your terms and by your initiation only. Don't let her solicit or provoke it.
If you do, she will learn multiple lessons in engagement and boundaries and she will be more emotionally engaged to you. |

| I second Jeff's advice, I too live in Texas, although a little cooler area of Texas than y'all, but we play this way all the time. To switch things up, I play a rougher version of soccer, I play tugs in this manner, I also have done a variation of husky play with a deflated ball or a tugs, if she drops the ball or tugs I will toss it and have her fetch it (the running will wear her out too, and helps with, imho, the desire to run and run, haha, away from you) and then resume husky play, other times I will sneak in command training when she drops the tugs I will have her sit and stay then toss and her reward is to fetch(reinforces recall) and then resume the play. Think of different commands and sneak them in. If you have enough property, like we do, set up your own agility course. The bond we've created is wonderful, and most of it has to do with me being a husky too!! Oh, and btw welcome to the forum!! |

| I'm in a bit of a curmudgeonly mood today, so how about you fill out your profile a bit more so that we fellow Texans have some idea of where you are (Please). I'm from deep south west Texas by the Big Bend.
I'm on the wrong thread, of the two you've started, so if it sounds kind of out of place - well, oops, sorry.
Since I live on the desert where summer temps hit the century mark as a matter of course and 110-115 aren't uncommon I can relate to the question of what do you do with these northern dogs during the day?
My two are often in the house with me - and I have no air, relying on low humidity and a breeze to keep comfortable. That means the dogs are exposed to the same high temps I am - but it seems to bother them not at all. Their fur acts as an excellent insulator keeping them warm in the winter and to a large degree, cool in the summer. Of course common sense must reign - keep plenty of fresh water available as they'll go through it; keep walks to early morning (not this kid!) or late evening where the suns not beating down on you all. It came as a pleasant surprise to me that they adapt quite well to the heat and know when it's safe to go out and when it's best to just laze the day away. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |
