This thread is awesome! A round of treats on me. Nothing I can add really, since I have no puppy experience.

Here's a Podcast by Ian Dunbar on Resource Guarding. Something to listen to while you wait for your book to arrive. :-)
Ian Dunbar: Resource Guarding Podcast He's got a truly charming British Accent... I could listen to him talk for hours...

Victoria Stilwell also has a podcast. Positively Podcast

Ok! So I received my copy of Mine! on friday and I finished reading it on saturday. To be quite honest I felt extremely bored while reading it. I normally eat up dog training books. I think the main problem is the book sounds like the author is writing for only dog trainers and not for owners looking for guidance on how to train their dog. The language in the book was difficult for me to understand and I feel that I have a higher level of reading comprehension since I myself am planning on becoming a writer. I will be going to college soon studying journalism and getting a degree in English. I spend a fair amount of time reading and writing. It took me about 75% through the book to start to understand what she meant by certain terms. Also the book didn't really cover many things that I either didn't already know like how to de-sensitize the dog, how to create positive emotional responses, and things of that sort. I will agree that the average person (I just adopted my first dog and never have trained before type person) probably doesn't know these types of things. I wished I got more new ideas on how to work with Loki using different methods. I also think that this book was meant for more extreme cases of guarding. She uses a lot of methods like approaching the dog from a couple feet back from an empty food bowl, walking by and tossing the treat in the bowl rather than the hand feeding I have been doing.

I guess I feel like I didn't get any new information from the book and if you aren't a dog trainer or have never read any of the language she uses its hard to understand the message she is trying to get out.

However I have high hopes for another book she recommended in her book (she references other trainers a lot) by Ian Dunbar so I will be going down to my local library to check that out I hope they have it ^_^

On a positive note Loki is responding pretty well to hand feeding. Though he still needs work and he will still growl if you try to take a toy away from him. I have been researching local dog trainers in my area to take him too. He will also be getting neutered in another week or so. As soon as my local clinic has an opening (they are a low cost spay/neuter clinic and you got to get an appointment a week early). So hopefully that will help as well!

I also plan on buying a book recommended to me about clicker training so we can see how it goes! ^_^
