| This is my husky pup whos 8 months old and that is my other dog whos 1 1/2 years old but has twice her energy. my husky, shelby, is an amazing dog. super sweet super laid back, and perfect with my baby. but i have a big concerning problem she is the biggest counter surffer i have ever seen and i have owned big dogs before. its getting to the piont where it is severly a health risk. she has eatten pounds of chacolate, shardes of glass, razor blades, chicken bones, and much worse. its scaring me. and i'm thinking maybe i'm not feeding her enough or maybe she is bored? i take her to the park for 3 hours everyday along with my little one. and i feed her 1 1/2 cups moring and night. i have chosen to do it out of a slow feed bowl becuase when i got her she would eat 2 cups of food in under one minute becuase her litter was feed from one tub and she was the runt. she is VERY food agressive becuase of it. her mom and dad are highly ranked sled dogs. and i got her from my friend who bought her not knowing what she was getting into. i have tried doing my reasearch and no where does it specify what to give them just untill they don't eat anymore....but i don't want her to get over weight..... i have never owned a husky before and i really need help so i figured i'd turn to a site like this for advice and help. |

| Hi there and welcome to the forum!
I have a few questions first. Does she only counter surf while you are gone, or even while you're there in the kitchen with her? Also, have you just tried completely blocking out the kitchen with a baby gate? How about using a crate when you're not home to make sure she doesn't get into anything in general while you are away.
I know some people have used like metal sheet pans and put them at the edge of the tables/counters so when the dog jumps up, they'll knock it over making a loud sound and the dogs tend to get scared to keep doing it. I'm not sure if it'll work for you but maybe you could give something like that a try. |

| welcome to the forum!! Â Rocio gave great advice on counter surfing. As far as food is concern, what brand are you feeding? If it's high quality then perhaps increase by a 1/4 cup per feeding for now. Many huskies as they mature self regulate their feeding requirements. My girl skips eating, but maybe a bone only, once a week. Yes some do get fat, but at this point your pup needs to have trust built with you, to know that the food will keep coming, hope that made sense? In what way is she food aggressive if I may ask, so I can better help you. Renee |

| I also have this problem with my girl who's about to be one! She will just jump right up on any table/counter when she smells food. We crate her while we aren't home and keep her out of kitchen with a baby gate when we are. But anytime she smells food she is right up where it is we are having a hard time breaking this habit. |

| welcome to the forum Atwigg1! Miya did this once or twice when she was maybe 6 months old, "NO DOWN" seemed to work for us. Rocio gave some ideas as well. My only other advice would be redirection, give her a bone, chewy, something that is food that will occupy for awhile. Funny We've had 4 cats over the years as well and none have been counter surfers and never had to even deal with the problem, and I know plenty of cat and husky owners that have had to deal with it. Another command you can use, and does work with Miya and the bed is "Mine", bring her over and point say mine and everytime you catch her doing this repeat. Good Luck |

| My huskies have never countersurfed...yet. But I did have to use the baby gate method of blocking access to the kitchen after coming home and finding nothing but my previous husky's butt sticking out of the refridgerator. Him and Anuschka had quite the feast while I was gone!!! You would think that after eating an entire block of American cheese slices from Costco and then throwing it up everywhere in the house (including my closet) would have discouraged them from going back for more but nope, they indeed went back for more. My boy was smart, he watched how things operated and then did it himself, so....he could open the refridgerator, the oven, the pantry, front doors and backdoors and yes, the baby gate as well |
