Introducing a new puppy Empty
PostSubject: Introducing a new puppy   Introducing a new puppy EmptyThu Nov 20, 2014 11:19 am

Hello all!

Our friend has just gotten a new husky puppy and I'm wondering how I should introduce Nala to this new puppy, I want to see how she will react to a puppy so that when the time comes and we get a second dog I want to see how she would react.

is there any certain way I should introduce Nala to our friends new puppy without scaring her and the other dog?

How old is the puppy?

When Josh got Archer at 17 weeks old, he brought puppy to the house, we had both Ami and puppy on leashes, we sort of just walked around the driveway, slowly approached each other. Both dogs were chomping at the bit to meet, standing on their hind legs, pulling at their leashes. First, I let them play at the end of their leashes, just close enough for front paws and heads to connect (without strangling each other on their lines). It was clear there was no aggression problems right from the start - my only concern was Archer getting hurt from rough play. I finally just let them loose in the backyard, watching closely for anything bad but it was really a non-issue. Both dogs were so happy to play with another dog that nothing else mattered.

Ultimately, I had to worry more about Ami overheating than anything else (it was June). Let me tell you, Ami took a lot of abuse from that little pup...Archer was constantly hanging from Ami's jowl fur Laughing

The only thing I watch for is Archer can be really tenacious with his bones and scarfs his food down lickety split and then goes for Ami's so I tether Archer while they eat.

Thats a good idea the last time we brought a puppy around Nala she did good but i was nervous because she kept putting her big ole head on the puppy like rubbing him it was weird but Nala doesnt know how to really "play nice" she plays like a husky so im nervous!

I'd just be careful that Nala recognizes puppy is a dog not prey (the size difference, but that just may be my "worry-wort" at work.) Ami is just so mellow, everything was really a non-issue.

I was nervous at first, too. But Archer plays every bit like a husky, specializes in "take downs." Sometimes, he looks like a big cat killing an antelope when he grabs Ami by the throat, puts his paw over his back and wrestles him to the ground affraid

Jeff (seatlesibe) told me in the beginning to just watch for "excessive pinning" and supervise their play. Early on, Ami was more gentle with Archer as if he knew Archer was still a baby. Now, its no-holds-barred, full out husky war-play. Archer is now 8 mos old. and the two are best buddies. Both are neutered.

okay cool! Nala doesnt really have a huge prey drive which is good only cats and birds and some times squirrels Wink so that makes me feel a little bit better. with the last puppy i noticed the "excessive pinning" she would lay on top of him i was scared she would squish him!
