| Subject: Sudden treat aggression? Fri Oct 24, 2014 2:57 am | |
| I'm not sure if "aggression" is the right word, but it's what I can think of right now. For those who don't know, I've had Bradbury for over a year now, and he's about two and a half. He's a very calm husky and listens pretty well, loves treats but not toys, and loves other dogs. We recently adopted a timid Labrador/Whippet mix named Krissy who is very sweet and adores Bradbury. They do get along really well, but mostly in the mornings.
By mid afternoon to evening, if we try to give the dogs treats or when it comes to evening feedings, Bradbury will push her away and take the treat or food. He does not do this during the morning feeding, just the evening one. A couple of times he has growled at her if he thinks she's going to take a treat, though he listens when I tell him no and he's a little bit better at not growling if I present both treats at the same time. He also does not do this every time or even all the time.
I usually give Bradbury his food first and then give Krissy hers, but it's still the same feeding time. This evening, we did just that (although it was my girlfriend feeding them and not me), and he growled and pushed her away to take her food despite having his own. He did not bite or show his teeth, and Krissy is very timid so she just left, and we had to re-feed her at a later time.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? It seems to me he's exhibiting jealous behaviours but I also know sometimes we humans project a lot onto our dogs. I don't want to separate them when it comes to feeding, and like I said it only happens during evening feedings and not morning ones. And as stated above, they actually get along really well and play with each other; he just gets upset when it comes to treats. |

| It sounds like he's just adjusting to having someone around that he has to share with. Diz was awful the first time he was around other dogs (in a home environment), especially with toys. After some play dates at home and also outside, he's gotten better. I wouldn't separate them completely for feeding, but maybe just by a few more feet. So, keep them in the same room, but if he leaves his bowl and starts to approach hers, a stern 'ah, ah' and block his approach. If he's not getting it, send him to timeout, or his crate. Same rules for her, if she approaches him while eating 'ah, ah' and block her approach. If she leaves food leftover in her bowl, pick it up and don't leave it out. |
