| Subject: Urinating in the Crate!! Wed Oct 15, 2014 3:54 pm | |
| Hello everyone! I want to introduce myself and my fellow companion. My name is Ben and I have a 3 month old red husky named Pasha. I love him to death, and we have been making a lot of progress in his training. He is a ball of energy and definitely has been showing his personality.
I have been concerned about an issue lately with him. I have been noticing that SOMETIMES...not ALL but enough to be concerned, that he will urinate in his crate, either at night time, or while I am away at work. He has been doing great with potty training outside of the crate. Just however when I come home for lunch or in the middle of the night, sometimes he will have peed in his crate and on himself. I keep it pretty tight in the crate, just enough space for him to lay down... regardless sometimes he will still urinate.
Any suggestions on how to right this problem? or any tips or reasoning's as to why this is happening? I know he is still quite young at 3 months, but i want to get this problem fixed before it turns into a bad habit. Thanks! |

| How often are you letting him out? At 3 months old, I was still getting up in the night about every 3-4 hours to let Loki out to pee. |

| I know each dog is different, but my pup was holding it in all night (9 PM until 5 Am) by the time she was 3 months old. During the day she needs to go out every 2 hours if she is outside her crate, every 3 hours if she is inside it.
Do you have any cloth or pad in your crate? It might sense to remove them if you do. |

| I started with having a blanket in there with him, but learned fast and removed it. At night he will wake up around 3 or 4. I work during the day, so he usually goes in around 7:45am until I get home for lunch around 12, then in again at 1 and back out around 5:30pm. I know it's a long time for a pup so little. He's better at nighttime. Should I consider doggie daycare until he's old enough to hold it? |

| I am home 3 days of the week, so this is only for the 4 days that I am gone. When I'm home he goes out every 2 hrs at the longest, and most times he will show me the door if he needs to go out sooner. |

| You don't necessarily need doggy day care that can be a hit on the wallet... Do you have a neighbor you trust or a family member near by or a friend... that can come over an let him out every two hours while you are gone? 7:45am till noon is too long. There is about 2 other potty breaks needed during that time. And from 1-5:30 there is another 2 potty breaks needed. It isn't going to be this way for very long, but it is needed for potty training. When you do catch him going in the crate (in action, not if you missed it) Stomp your foot on the floor and shout, "No!" and immediately go outside with him. It will help get your point across that this is not a behavior you want from him and it will encourage him to try and stop doing it.

| Yeah I think I'm going go have to find one of my neighbors to take him out. I do trust them and we get along great. I am glad to hear that it is too long for him to be in there. I was just worried that it isn't too long and he may have an issue. This I will definitely look into. Thank you all for your help, hopefully I can have someone let him out while I am gone. Thanks guys! I appreciate all the advice. He did great today btw |

| My marrema pup Starr had this problem too. I took out all bedding and cleaned her crate with vinegar. It took a few weeks, she even began peeing in her crate without crying to let me know. I think it was probably because the crate was too big for her.
She's five months old now and is the same size as my 2.5 year old husky x Freya, she hasn't messed her crate in about 6 weeks now.
Hope this helps. |

| Thank you! Everything helps, since I posted my concerns he suprising has been ALOT better now. He actually is willingly going into his crate now without a struggle and is holding it until I get home. I am actually quite shocked at the quick turnaround. Hopefully the profession continues! |
