Dizzy has done really well on raw, but when I start to work on training and give him treats, his tummy gets all messed up and he has diarrhea for a day or two. So, I stop with the treats until things are solid, then a little more training and back it comes. I've tried several different kinds, and they all seem to cause this problem. Any suggestions?

I use freeze dried liver. You can buy it at petsmart or even make your own. This website has a list of commercial treats near the end that are okay for a raw diet: http://www.rawfed.com/myths/training2.html Do you give him pumpkin purée? A little bit every day will help with diarrhea. Don't freak out when it comes out undigested! That's normal.. Or at least I hope it is, lol

Yeah, we do the pumpkin. I was giving him liver treats, but they have wheat in them, they are more like crackers. Thanks for the suggestion on the liver, and the link to that thread, I will definitely check it out and stop by petsmart on my way home today.

Do you stick with the same protein you're raw feeding, or do you vary it?

I like to use freeze dried or dehydrated meat and/or organ treats. For example, chicken and duck jerky is commonly used in our house along with freeze dried liver (various animal sources, I like to offer variety), and freeze dried lamb lung is a big favorite amongst my pack. _________________

I'm using beef liver for the treats but the rest of her food is mostly chicken. I also give her a can of sardines with no dalt added once a week which she LOVES! I will start feeding turkey next week along with the chicken

Jen, see if you can find freeze dried liver that is only liver, no other ingredients. That's what I look for is single ingredient meat/organ treats. FWIW, my sibe can eat raw beef but freeze dried beef liver upsets his tummy the same way other processed beef does so I just make sure to avoid FD beef liver with him and feed FD liver from other animals instead instead. _________________

Okay thank you so much! The treats I had were pretty good, Charlee bear. They had normal ingredients without any weird stuff, but thinking about it, it didn't list the type of liver in them, just 'liver' but it was the number one ingredient, either way, they don't agree with Dizzy. I just ordered a few different kinds of freeze dried liver from amazon to test out. Any experience with natural balance LIT? I got a couple different flavors of those as well. I know on dog food adviser, it gives the food a 3 because of the high carb content, but not sure on how that translates to the treats.

I've used Natural Balance LIT and had good results with it on all my dogs, two of which have very sensitive stomachs. I mainly used the duck and venison flavors of the NB LIT when I bought it. _________________

Wonderful! Thank you! I got the duck and chicken. I thought it might be good to stick with the protein he's used to once his tummy settles down a bit. No treats until things firm back up, and then I'll start slow.

I use Zukes Mini's, dehydrated lamb lung (that's the only ingredient) and chicken jerky from bestbullysticks.com No issues to speak of

My breeder gave me a bag of NB LIT and my pup does well with those as well. The smell is very strong so it gets my pup focused right away when she smells it in my hand |

That's actually great, I need something that will get his attention quickly! My brother and I were joking that Dizzy is 'book smart' Learns commands fast, but not too much common sense yet. |
