How long for coat to grow back? Empty
PostSubject: How long for coat to grow back?   How long for coat to grow back? EmptyTue Apr 01, 2014 7:31 pm

Today I took my husky to the vet for a dental cleaning and left him for a few hours. He also had a bite wound on one of his legs from our other husky about a week ago that we kept wrapped up to heal. When I went to pick him up from the vet, they completely shaved about an inch around the bite mark...for whatever reason I don't know so now he just has this one spot on his leg completely missing hair.

So I'm wondering ...

Why would they do this?

And how long would u say it'll take for him to grow his hair back in that area evenly to the rest of his coat ? Is there snyhing I could do to speed up the process?

I'm kinda upset they did this without my consent and it kinda makes him look awkward =/

Anyways...I appreciate any help/tips. Thanks!

Was it wrapped when you brought him to the vet?

It should grow back pretty quickly, I mean after my boys got neutered there hair grew back a lot quicker than I thought it would. I know there are some tricks that people on this forum have tried, but I don't remember what they are. You could do a search and type in a bunch of keywords and that should come up with some advice for you!

they shaved it so it could breath better and heal, i have always heard you do not wrap or stitch bite wounds, that you need to leave them open to breath...

Sierra had her surgery on Feb 19. they shaved her whole back leg as well as a small patch on her front leg and lower back opposite leg for the needle. the lower legs since its shorter hair is filling in faster then her hind leg. but you can still see a clear square patch where it was shaved so for me i feel like its taking forever to grow back.

It is pretty much standard protocol with open wounds to shave around it.
They want to keep it clean and not have hair grow into the wound as it heals up.

Don't worry, the hair grows back quickly.

Ok thanks for the info! We only wrapped it to stop him from licking at it cause he would do it constantly

We feed him high quality food so hopefully that'll help speed things up. Also heard fish oil supplements help as well?

Thanks again for the info

My husky was recently bitten at a dog beach by at pitbull. He bit down on her snout and owuldn't let go. She had holes on the inside of her mouth and two gashes on her snout. The vet shaved the hair around it to let it breath and help it heal without causing any kind of infection. That was a week ago and her hair has already started to grow back pretty quickly. I would assume it takes just a few weeks Smile

I think it definitely grows back slower in certain areas. Anyas belly was shaved about 3 weeks ago for her spay and its just BARELY starting to grow back in. I want to give her fish oil but she gets the poops after a couple days. She also hasnt been eating her whole Sardines  Rolling Eyes I think I'll try canned sardines next...

I wish the vet told me how much fur they were going to take off for a simple neutering. I'm watching my boy's coat come in patchy, exactly how I knew it was going to come back in..

It can honestly be hit or miss with the coat growing back the way it was. Generally, it will not be the same color as a surgical shave is so close it really ruins the coat they took off. The coat may come back in as a different texture.

I think with it being on the leg (no guard hairs), it should return mostly back to normal. IMHO hair on a husky can take quite a while to grow back, especially after a surgical shave.
