Hi all,

You will have to excuse me, as I'm a newbie husky owner. As in not quite 2 days. So I'm sure there will be many posts from me, either asking silly questions or just worrying over absolutely nothing.

Tzar's story is in the welcome section and quite long so I won't type it again here and bore you all. But please go and read.

So this time round my query is that Tzar, who is 10 months old, bolts his food down like there's no tomorrow. Cup and a half gone in under thirty secs! I don't think he actually tastes it. Is this going to cause his tummy any harm, ie bloating etc? How to I stop him eating so quick? Or just let him get on with it.

Our dog was similar when we first got him - also from shelter. I think being in the shelter with lots of other dogs around they feel like they have to eat it or lose it. Also, my dog was sadly neglected and underweight before going to the shelter, chained on very short leash next to much larger, dominant dog so who knew how much food was left for him. The first feeding I gave him (2 cups) was gone almost by the time I stood up from putting his food down  

Now, he savors his food. And when I put the warm water in, he laps that up first and then chews up the kibble. I only do this in winter because he prefers to eat snow, not drink water and I want to keep him well hydrated. So, I would think once your dog settles in he may slow down his eating. If not, you could always put his food in a dog puzzle (kong, etc. - I just stuffed a shin bone that he had eaten all the marrow from with wet kibble and a tiny bit of peanut butter then froze it - it will be his treat later today.)

Ahh yes I didn't think about the shelter thing. Another new daddy worry out of the way. Only a million left

I use to have this problem with Nikolai. He still eats pretty fast, but has slowed down some. I agree with the above. You can get puzzles to slow him down, spread it across the floor, or in stead of buying those expensive slow feeder dishes you can actually put a ball in the middle of his dish and it forces them to eat around it as would the slow feeder. I thought that was a crazy idea, because I just thought the dog would get mad and move the ball, but it actually did work for us.

Brilliant idea! I don't know, call myself a design engineer! Tut tut.

Kylah did that for every meal until just recently. She is almost 9 months, and just this week she decided to take her time. Shes now even leaving the room a few times and returning to finish her food.
In the husky book I have, it says huskies eat every meal like its their last, which is why portion control is so important.

Thanks for replying Melissa. This is only his third evening and has his feeding time worked out already. Went nuts for 20 mins before his evening meal.

I know your boy is kind of older but he is still young and I have heard pups tend to be vacuums at least my boy is. He might relax more as he gets older and more relaxed with you and his new life.
