| As many of you surely know the Westminster Dog Show is Monday and Tuesday, airing 8-11 each on CNBC and USA, respectively.
Monday night will be the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding groups. Tuesday night will be the Sporting, Working, Terrier groups, and Best in Show.
Monday and Tuesday daytime westminsterkennelclub.org will be live streaming all of the best of breed judging. The Husky judging is Tuesday at 1 ET/10 PT.
I figured we could start a thread to discuss everything and where we can all chime in on stories, dogs you know, people you know, dogs in your dog's pedigree, and comment on the judging results, etc.
I've always loved watching the show. It's one of my fondest bonding moments with my mother that we did together every year when she was alive and I was a kid.
I found out from Link's breeder that one of the Husky competitors, CH Innisfree's Chuck A Luck, is Link's grandfather. I will be watching the breed judging Tuesday for sure.
Also.....we don't have TV access at home and I have yet to find a way to watch the Group Show online when it airs. Does anyone know of a way to watch online? Is anyone able to record a DVD of it at home and willing to send it to me? I really wanna watch it one way or the other.
Chat away folks. |

| The Westminster Show is a standard dog show, but it is the premier dog show by the AKC in the country.
For every pure breed there is a standard that illustrates the ideal dog in that breed that is determined by breed purpose, functionality, and all of the physical measurements of the breed. Our breed standard is set by the Siberian Husky Club of America http://shca.org/.
Qualified dogs compete in the Best of Breed round, where a winner is crowned to represent the breed at large. Then each breed winner competes in the Best of Group, where there are 7 groups: Hound, Toy, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Working, Herding, and Terrier. Once the 7 winners of each group are chosen, then those 7 group representatives compete in the final round for Best In Show.
That's the basic set up and how it is formatted. |

| My mom used to raise Old English Sheepdogs, took one to Westminster. Lots of other shows, too. Let me assure you - Siberians are not the only dogs with hair To this day, I hate vacuuming because of all that dog hair on the plush wool carpet. However, the sibe personality more than makes up for it I'm not interested in showing - all I remember was all the politics and the endless grooming. And running around after a bitch who wouldn't lay down delivering her first puppy and the puppy was hanging out and me chasing her with my hands ready to catch the puppy when it fell out and hollaring my head off for my mother to come down to the basement...Ami is neutered |

| Apparently you can watch live-stream judging from the Web site: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/
There's also an app. I think you can also watch a live stream from it on your phone as well. I'm going to download it and see what happens! |

| If you're going to watch live streaming via the Web or the app, the husky judging will be in Ring 11. As Jeff mentioned, it's Tuesday at 1 p.m. EST. To watch video on the app or through the Web you must choose the ring you want to watch. |

What's his registered name? I'm kinda thinking it's gonna come down to Fizzy vs. Rumor, but there could always be an upset... What do you think? |

| From pictures, I prefer Fizzy, but I haven't seen rumor in person. I just prefer Fizzy's proportions, I like his length of loin and leg. To me Rumor looks like he has shorter legs, although Rumor is more angled. I like Fizzy's croup, chest and head better too. I'd like to see them in the ring next to each other though. Maybe I'll have to take a long lunch tomorrow and go see them. |

| So I've always wondered this about dog shows. Once the Best In Show comes around, we have 7 Champions, perhaps all Grand Champions, who represent their breed (and group) nearly perfectly, or at least more perfectly than the rest of their breed present at the show as judged by the judge.
So what other criteria are used to pick a winner of BIS? Surely at this point, conformation to the breed standard is kind of a moot point, no? So what distinguishes a BIS Champion from the other 6 Champions?

| From my understanding, they are still being judged against the breed standard. There is no perfect dog in any standard, so in a BIS, the winner is whoever is closest to their breed standard. In dog shows, the breed standard is never a moot point, it's the only point (technically, although I think politics play a role too). |

| But so does performance, yeah? Personality of the dog? Their energy or their swagger that day. If the nearly perfect Beagle has more spunk that day than the nearly perfect Pug, then the nearly perfect Beagle wins, right?
It just seems that at the point of BIS at Westminster, it would be nearly impossible for a person to judge 7 nearly perfect dogs to 7 completely different standards in any sort of quatifiable way.
How do the politics come in? Do the judges know who the dogs are and where they come from? |

| Well, I don't know much about the politics, since I haven't really been in the show world for real, so that's hearsay, but yeah, some people know the judges or some judges know the dogs/owners/handlers. I would hope that factors in less in a show like this, but I'm not sure.
I think whether performance matters or not, depends on the judge. I think some appreciate swagger, some don't care as long as their aren't any behavioral issues (aggression, fear, etc.).
Ideally every dog show results in a judge dealing with 7 nearly perfect dogs, Westminster is just a bigger stage that attracts the most well known dogs, but that doesn't mean that there aren't nearly perfect dogs at smaller shows. In fact, the road to Westminster and big shows is through smaller shows.
I know it's hard to imagine, but the judges do really think the dog they pick is most perfectly in line with it's breed standard. More so than the others. |

| I reckon swagger might come into play if the breed standard specifically calls for it. Like the Husky specification of their gait. |
