I am sooo happy with this vacuum I just have to share. We got a Dyson DC41 Animal vacuum 2 weeks ago and I have never loved a vacuum quite so much as I love this Dyson. For years I've said I would never buy a Dyson; first because it doesn't rank very high on Consumer Reports, second because it's EXPENSIVE, and third because it is bagless and I have always sworn I'd never use another bagless vac after my first (because of how filthy they are to empty).
We already had 2 perfectly working vacuums, one of which I'd just bought only 4 months ago. Along comes the Dyson DC41 and we also got the Dyson Groom tool to brush and vacuum the fur from our constantly shedding sibe.
The Dyson DC41 Animal:
And the Groom Tool:
First test, we vacuumed the floors with my older (but still relatively new) 4 month old Kenmore that I just bought recently which has a dirt sensor and tells me when the floors are clean and I can move on. Keep in mind this Kenmore vac ranked higher than the Dyson on Consumer Reports. Then we ran over the same freshly vacuumed area with the Dyson and it picked up a TON of debris and fur that the other vac left behind. I'm talking enough to make hubby and I speechless! Not to mention how light it is and easy to maneuver, and it glides so much easier over thick rugs than any other vac I've ever had. It has a nice long cord, HOWEVER to use the attachments you'd have to let down the entire cord before you can use them which is a disappointment.
As for the Groom Tool, it's pretty much a slicker brush attachment with a retracting piece that allows the brushed fur to be pushed out of the bristles and sucked into the vacuum. My sibe has always been terrified of all vacuums and has never been a fan of the slicker brush so I was really doubting that this would work well. After some gentle coaxing I started brushing/vacuuming the fur off my sibe without any trouble. Not only did my sibe do stellar with it, the tool works brilliantly. Of course we all know how much sibes shed and the fur coming off of him was neverending so after about 25 minutes of brushing/vacuuming with the tool and FILLING the canister with fur I finally had to just call it quits...otherwise I'd be working on him forever. The Dyson Groom Tool gets a major 2 thumbs up from me and has already been put through it's paces.
My quick list of pros and cons for the vacuum...
Pros: -Lightweight -Easy to maneuver -Long cord -Amazing pickup (but on the down side it requires more frequent emptying of the canister...a small price to pay for a cleaner house and totally worth it) -Comes with a roller brush attachment to vacuum hair from furniture & stairs -Self adjusting floor height (fantastic when switching from hard floors to carpets to rugs)
Cons: -Price ($600 for the vacuum and $70 for the groom tool) -Bagless -Requires entire cord to be removed to use attachments -Bottom hook to wrap cord around is too low requiring user to bend over each pass to wrap cord
Overall, this vacuum has turned a long time Dyson doubter into a true fan and believer. If I had the opportunity go back in time and change my decision, I would do it all over again.
Do I recommend this vacuum? ABSOLUTELY!!! Best vacuum I've ever owned and we've had a number of Kenmores, Bissels, Eurekas, and Orecks. And something I never thought I'd say, it's expensive but totally worth it. I don't know that I'll ever be able to go back to any other vacuum besides Dyson in the future.

Plastic? Does it generate enough static charge that hair sticks to the body and hose (particularly underneath and where the hose attaches to head)? I have yet to find a vacuum that addresses this.
Even the guy with the metal Kirby couldn't deny the static properties of vacuum motors.

I haven't noticed hair sticking to it like it does with my other vacuums but then I have never really paid too much attention to this...one of those things I just chalk up as inevitable. I just examined my Dyson and it's got only TWO pieces of fur stuck to it. Now I will say that fur DOES stick to the plastic Groom Tool which requires me to occasionally push it into the center so that it gets sucked up, that's really my only complaint with the groom tool and it's so much more helpful than a bother that I'm willing to deal with it.
Another thing I've noticed with this Dyson that I've never experienced with ANY other vacuum is that the carpet is actually warm after passing over it with the vacuum. Due to what I'm not sure...friction from the brush? Heat from the vac?
Jenn, lol, I will see if hubby would be willing to do a short vid for me since it requires two hands to hold Dakota and the tool.
Absolutely. I'm at the tipping point on spending $150 on the replacement head for my Rainbow. That thing has a hose material that doesn't collect a thing, and a stainless steel base on the power head.
Addressing static would be a 75% factor in a purchase decision for me.
Is there an estimated life span of the vacuum? For $600, it would have to last me some years... I'm pretty happy with the vac I have now and I have had it for 6 or 7 years. I paid around $180 for it but it is getting almost time to replace it.

No idea on the lifespan, but of all the people I know who've had a Dyson, not one has had to replace theirs yet. I would expect to get a good number of years out of it...I'd expect at least 10 yrs use if not more. However I've always taken good care of my vacs and have NEVER had one die on me. Even if it doesn't last my expectation of 10+ yrs, it'd still be worth it to me to have a cleaner house all the years that it did run smoothly.
I wanted this vacuum so bad when I was doing research on which to get! I hate that it's soo expensive, but I almost caved! Instead I bought a Eureka for pets and so far, it's held up great. I will eventually get my Dyson animal vac I just need the funds for school right now! GRR!
Having five siberians in the house not to mention when they decide to throw a party and we end up with a dozen or more in the house; the Dyson is a must. I don't know why anyone would want a bag as they cost a fortune and fill up in 3 seconds. The canister is easy to clean and with the amount of molting I have on average I'm glad I buried my Kirby years ago.
I've had mine for about 10 years and the only thing that's gone wrong is the clasp to empty the plastic canister broke. Well Dyson replaced it the whole cyclone body (not the plastic canister) for free. Kudos to Dyson for A+ CS.
I'm glad to see you got good result with the groomer but 60 bucks is a bag of Red Paw and treats so I guess we'll keep yanking handfuls off
i have the same vac. i caved and bought it..LOVE IT! i also love how far the hose stretches. i dont have to lug the vac up the stairs to clean it i just extend the tool up and it reaches to the top step. i may have to look into getting the groom tool! i also want to add that i think the vacuum runs very hot. much more so than any other one i've owned. the vacuum comes with a 5 year warranty and i got an extended 2 year from lowes. i've had two vacs break in the past on me in less than a couple years. i also had a eureka airspeed. i honestly think that vacuum had slightly better suction but it would lose it after the canister got a little full. i love the self adjusting vacuum head on the dyson. i have hardwood floors with different height area rugs and i can do the whole house thanks to the nice rubber wheels on the vacuum
I did this short video a while ago and it's just been sitting on my memory card...until now. Dakota had just finished blowing coat so it wasn't picking up substantial amounts but it was still picking up enough. What will be interesting is a video using the groom tool when he's actually blowing coat.
Also another pro that I forgot to mention, which Shannon also posted, is how nice the self adjusting floor height is when switching from hard floors to carpets to rugs. I will edit my original post to include that.

Val what did prompt you to buy it since you did just get the other a few months ago?
It was on sale. Lol
In all fairness it wasn't just about the sale. Having an easier to use vac means I'll be vacuuming more frequently which in turn means less husky fur everywhere. I feel bad enough that my baby girl and all her stuff is constantly covered in fur...makes me feel like a bad mom when I'm pulling husky fur off her face, hair and even out of her mouth sometimes.

I just purchased this vacuum a couple of weeks ago, and besides other customers looking at me crazy because I just spent 600$ on a vacuum I believe it was well worth it. If the Pet Grooming tool works well I'll definitely be buying it.
We also have it and love it. We got the Pet pack, but it was just for pet clean-up, not grooming. I'll have to look at the grooming tool for sure.
We registered for it for our wedding, and didn't get it, but Target had the deal where if y ou had something on your registery, but didn't get it, you could buy it yourself for 30% off. Made a killing on that one.
The two bad things I've heard about Dyson are 1) breakdowns, and 2) it kills your carpet. Apparently the beater bar is so strong, it actually kinda shreds your carpet.
That being said, we haven't seen any noticable degradation of our carpet, and don't personally know of anyone that has had it breakdown, only friend of a friend of a friend stories.
Bottom line, we love it, and would buy another in a heart beat if this one poops out on us.
And as an add-on, here's a detailed explanation on how to thoroughly breakdown and do a super clean of your dyson: http://www.askannamoseley.com/2011/02/how-to-clean-your-dyson.html

Bought the Groom Tool in a kit package several weeks ago from Amazon for less then $40 with free shipping to boot.
Trying to use it with the hose on the Dyson Animal was a total pain in the arse. The hose was just way to thick/inflexible for the purpose intended. Finally got P/O'ed enough where I used my Shop Vac with the Groom Tool. The hose on the Shop Vac is thinner and very flexible, the nozzle wasn't a perfect fit but snug enough where it didn't readily fall out. (only happen twice in 5 uses)
Now on to Adobo & Biko of course at first it was get that damn vacuum away from me. When they saw that attitude wasn't going to work they settled down pretty good. What I did was slide it over them a few times without the brush teeth sticking out so they wouldn't fear the attachment. Adobo was better but she always is when it comes to the brushing and Furminator. For the 1st time for both I felt they did good.
This afternoon was the 2nd time for Adobo and 3rd time for Biko. This time I did Adobo 1st so maybe Biko would learn a bit of self control from her. I think it worked he was very calm during the 5 minutes I used it on him.
Over all I think its a great product using it with my Shop Vac. If I only tried it with the Dyson, I think it would probably end up in the junk box in the garage after a few more attempts, if I couldn't figure a way around the flexibility issue.
