| Hey all! This last weekend me and my husband picked up our new puppy. She had been living in an outdoor kennel with her other littermates. I'm guessing the breeder would place a bowl of food in there and let the puppies at it. Now because of this she will literally try to inhale her food all at once, while biting and snapping at our 2 year old husky, Lyra, if she gets near her.. This morning puppy cut her paw on Lyra's tooth while feeding. I've tried letting her eating for a few seconds, then pulling the bowl away, then giving it back to her but all she does is eat as much as she can the moment the bowl is within her reach again. How can I put this to an end quickly? It's sad that I can't feed my dogs together without them trying to kill each other.. Also, is it bad that puppy will walk around and sniff the empty food bowl for about 20 minutes after we've fed her? Thanks |

| Separate your dogs for feeding right now. It's clearly a very stressful thing for the puppy and there's no reason to make her feel like she still needs to compete. I would spread meals out throughout the day. You can soak kibble to make it bigger and make her feel fuller which allows you to feed more often during the day without over feeding.
Flat surfaces help with scarfing. You can also put it in a long, my favorites are the Kong genius ones. They're easy to pack and easy for the dogs to eat out of. It will slow down the eating.
You can also employ hand feeding but still do this in a quiet area away from the other dog.
One thing I do highly discourage you doing is taking away the bowl. It will only make her inhale faster and could lead to a bite directed towards you. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | My wife and I recently adopted a husky puppy that apparently escaped but nobody claimed. I think he's around 2 to 3 months in age. He scarfs food and has shown aggression toward my other dogs. When I feed, I feed him first. I sit down beside him, putting my hand in his bowl and pet him. He's shown no aggression towards me. I then brought in Miska, my husky/pyrenees mix, who likes to guard her food. I put two bowls down, one for Kodiak and one for Miska. He scarfs his and then she eats hers. She does sit down a few feet from him while he eats though. If he gets too close while she is eating she lets him know. I watch intently during this. On one hand, I want him to see signals from the others but I don't want him to get hurt either. She'll growl and bear her teeth and he backs off a little. On the other hand, if he gets too close for my comfort level, I touch him like Cesar Milan would with a "SHHH". He minds me and sees me as pack leader and backs off. In just one week he has learned about pack order but still has a ways to go. At least this has worked for me and maybe it'll help you.
I would also have to think that he will grow out of this. Miska was the same way as a puppy. When we first got her a year ago we had to stop free feeding because of this behavior. Over the period of months, we were able to start free feeding again. The only exception to this is Smoky, our blind husky we rescued. He's a little overweight and I think he eats too much so we have to watch him a little. |

| I just feed my pups separately...Evee gets her's in her kennel and Karli gets her's in a kong wobbler (which Evee hasn't figured out yet.) Its safer that way and it keeps Evee from eating Karli's food. Making them uncomfortable is not fair when they're trying to eat. |

| my puppy has the same problem. i started hand feeding and that helped a lot with her trust towards me. she no longer growls when i or other people are near her when she eats.. but when my other dogs are near her she will lunge at them and growl and snarl and go back to her food or even if i mention food like i will say are you a hungry puppy? when i am about to feed her she will act aggressively towards my other dogs when there is no food present. i feed the other dogs first and have her watch to show that she is lower then them if that even works i don't know but i feel like if she sees that they eat first before her maybe she'll learn that her position is lower and not to be so aggressive towards them. she eats last separate from them now so there is no stress. i feed her through a doggy puzzle so she slows down. it used to take her like 10 seconds to scarf down almost a cup of food and now it takes at least a minute or three which is much better. good luck with the food issues i know how frustrating they can be. oh i also set her food down in front of me and have her make eye contact with me and wait for at least 10 or 15 seconds before i say ok and then she eats. hope this helps |
