2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Dog Nutrition Facts? Empty
PostSubject: Dog Nutrition Facts?   Dog Nutrition Facts? EmptySat Dec 28, 2013 11:55 pm

It occurred to me that when I'm keeping tabs on what I eat, I use the "Nutrition Facts" label to help keep track of things. (Keeping in mind that being active in sports means needing to eat more than the "normal" person, especially protein.)

I looked for the same on dog food, but only saw lists of what was in the food. Not how much the average dog needs to keep healthy.

I know dog food is regulated here in the States, but I was wondering if there was a set of recommendations for how much nutrients the average dog should have per day? And if there was one for working dogs too? A doggy "Nutrition Facts" sheet as it were?

As a human athlete, I remember how utterly critical good food and nutrients were in the right amounts. I assume it's the same for dogs, yet I'm woefully under informed about what those amounts are.  confused

For a lot of dog related stuff it depends on age, health, weight, and sometimes breed.

Raw food, for example, is recommended to be a certain percentage of the dog's body weight.

For that matter, the same is true for humans, but we need to standardize everything for protection against lawsuits.

How many billions of people do we have now? Is "based on a 2,000 calorie diet" or whatever it says on labels really accurate of all of them. Nope.

We started standardizing in WWII I think, at least most of the nutrition studies were done around that time. They're finally starting to do more now that it's become apparent that different situations require different amounts of nutrients, however it's still a great place to start from and works well for most "average" people. If you're not "average" it still gives you a very good baseline to measure against and keep track of things with.

Which is what I want to be able to do for my dogs. I hate guessing and having nothing to measure my results against except "feed more" and "feed less".

I may be asking too much. We may just not be to that point yet as a society, in terms of being able to spend money on that kind of study. But I was hoping we were. Smile

Check this out. The RER is something I've had to use in school to calculate how much a dog should get of a prescription diet. As stated in the link, every life stage is different for every dog.

Hey, that's great! Thanks! Good place to start from.

Is there a place to get a higher resolution of the RER chart?
